Hi TME,
A couple of years ago I purchased a Sealy Posturepedic mattress & boxspring on a metal bed frame. I think it was an extra firm, without any mattress topper.
I sleep alone, usually in the middle and on my side or stomach.
I am overweight, but not obese.
After a year, the developing body impression began to annoy me.
I called the store to complain and they sent someone to inspect it.
But they said that the impression wasn’t deep enough to meet the terms of the warranty.
I have since put a piece of plywood between the mattress and boxspring, but I still end up "in the valley."
I am now in the market for a wood bedframe, either a platform bed or a traditional frame with support slats for boxspring & mattress. Which style frame will give me the better chance of not developing body impressions? And, depending on that answer, what kind of mattress should I consider - I do like a firm mattress.
Thanks, Connie
Hi Connie,
I’m afraid that you’re thinking about this all wrong. It isn’t the lack of support that’s causing your problem, which is why that sheet of plywood didn’t work.
The problem is caused by the memory foam on top of the mattress.
Memory foam is the only type of upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.
It softens as it warms from the body heat you give off, which causes you to sink into it.
Memory foam returns, close enough to its original shape when you get out of bed, which is why the impression didn’t measure deep enough to meet the terms of the warranty.
It’s purposefully designed to just that, so that you are in the market for a new mattress in such a short period of time.
It’s design is positively diabolical.
The good news is that there’s an easy, relatively inexpensive fix for that.
The topper you didn’t buy initially, is what you need to buy now….and not one that’s made of memory foam.
Your best option provides a long term solution.
A latex mattress topper will insulate you from the memory foam.
Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex has been the best, longest lasting upholstery material for more than a century.
‘Latex for Less’ has the lowest prices on these highest quality latex mattress toppers. And buying factory direct is a tremendous savings.

You’ll notice that they are available in 2” or 3” thickness and in your choice of soft, medium or firm.
When a mattress isn’t new anymore and the body impression is too deep, it’s better to first flip the mattress over before adding the topper.
The underside of your one-sided mattress has little upholstery and no memory foam.
If you flip it over and try it, you’ll find it to be quite firm…too firm to sleep on comfortably.
If flipping your mattress the 3” soft topper is recommended for surface comfort.
Pure latex is extremely resilient…not as soft as other types of upholstery materials. (I mention PURE latex because latex that’s imported from China isn’t pure. It’s mixed with clay, which makes it cheaper and short lived).
Also, I recommend getting the organic cotton cover to go with it, which is priced separately.
This trick has been recommended by me many times, over the past decade since memory foam had become so widely used.
The result has always been the same…many more years of comfortable, sup sleep WITHOUT having had to buy a new mattress….the most recent beneficiary of this, being my mother-in-law.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks, TME
