Time to Replace My 6 year old Latex Mattress Topper.

Wendy writes:

Hi Pete, long time no talk.

I am a long-term customer of yours.
About six years ago you recommended that I get the Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress and a PureBliss Talalay Latex Topper.
Suffice to say I have been pain-free for every bit of those six years.
Recently, I have noticed that my topper seems to be softer than it used to be and I am missing the support that it was provided.
In just the last few months I have been having some back pain and ironically I am in great shape strength wise as I have been doing Pilates core for about 5 months.
I think I should replace the topper but not sure what firmness to get with the new brand Latex for Less on your website.
I see that you were recommending soft to a lot of people, but I'm not sure soft is for me. I have A history of L5 herniation and I always feel like my best sleep is when I am in a hotel, which is funny because I can never figure out why.
Anyway, I have to sleep on my back as a result of sleep apnea and wearing a CPAP machine, I am 200 pounds.
The final thing I will mention is that I have been using the mattress protector that I bought from you so I know that if this is breaking down, it has nothing to do with body heat and just normal wear and tear.
Anyway, when I bought the original topper from you. I think I got plush.
Would the equivalent be medium firmness and 2 inch?
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks, Wendy

Good Morning Wendy, and welcome back.
I’m pleased to hear that your sleep system has worked so well for so long.
The point of the latex topper was twofold…some surface comfort and to prevent your mattress from wearing out prematurely.
Your body heat only affects the materials in the mattress.
The latex topper prevents that from happening.
The mattress protector keeps everything clean and dry, which also enhances longevity. They’ve done they’re jobs.
Now, all these years later, all you need to replace is the topper and not the mattress.
The Latex for Less 2” Soft is my recommendation for comfort.
The medium is noticeably firmer.
If you sleep on your side, the soft will be more gentle on your hips and shoulders.
Since you’re using a cpap, perhaps you’re sleeping on your back.
If so, the medium might me the better choice.
I recommend getting the cover to go with it.
