Obnoxious Smell Coming from a 7 Yrs. Old Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.

Hi TME,

I purchased my Simmons Beautyrest mattress 7 yrs ago.

An obnoxious smell began coming from it about 2 years ago.

I'd never heard of this kind of problem with mattresses before and thought it was something I had caused and therefore tried to clean it with everything recommended on the Internet: baking soda, white vinegar, steam cleaning, etc. There was only short-term relief.

I've repeated this cleaning process many times, over the past 2 years, because I thought it was too late to complain about it.

Are other people also having this complaint now ?

Hi, and thank you for your question.

Yes. This can become a common problem when a waterproof mattress protector is not initially used.

The upholstery materials in the mattress consist of chemical based memory foam. Of the 61 different chemicals used to make memory foam, a few are toxic. You may have detected a chemical odor when it was new.

Over the years, your perspiration and body oils have seeped into the mattress and mixed with the chemicals in the upholstery layers of the mattress, which have combined to create the odor you have now.

At this point, there’s nothing you can do to thoroughly clean the mattress.

Short of buying a new mattress, there are a couple of ways around this issue.

Least Expensive Option:

Enclose your mattress in a plastic mattress bag, which you can pick up at a U-Haul center, will keep the odor from emanating into the room.

However, the plastic bag will cause you to sleep hot.

Best Option:

Buy an organic cotton waterproof mattress encasement, which will do the same job without causing you to sleep hot.

You can avoid this problem from reoccurring with whatever mattress you purchase next, by using an organic cotton waterproof mattress protector,

which will prevent your perspiration from getting into the upholstery layers.

Here’s a link to those organic cotton waterproof mattress protectors and encasements, which do not sleep hot.

Note: An encasement is a zipper-on product that totally encases the mattress. It’s not something that you’ll want to routinely take off and put back on to launder.

You’ll want to include a fitted mattress protector for laundering purposes.

Thanks, TME
