A Mattress to Relieve Back Pain, Pear Shaped Woman.

 Nancy writes:

Hello Pete,

I got your information from Debbie, one of your satisfied customers, who is a friend of mine.  I'm wondering if you can help me figure out what kind of mattress I need?

I've been waking up with back pain every morning, including having some back spasms when walking or moving for a little while after getting up.

The back pain sometimes stays all day. I am a side sleeper, usually left side, as I have a torn rotator cuff on the right.  I'm 185-190# and 5’ 1”, or so.

I'm a pear shaped woman with larger hips than the rest of me.

I was recently diagnosed with early osteoporosis if that helps.

My husband is about 150-155# and 5’ 10”, or so.

He is a back sleeper but sometimes side and sleeps on a wedge-type pillow arrangement because he has reflux.

He also has had a herniated disc in his neck.

Our head of the bed is raised with a 2x4 under the headboard to help his reflux and/or neck.

Usually, we like a rather soft mattress.

We had a sleep number bed for many  years that the foam deteriorated.  Our settings were typically 25-35 on that bed.

We like a queen size. Our current mattress is a medium soft/hard bed and we have a foam topper to make it softer.

But we need a new bed as I can't deal with the pain on waking up every morning.

Can you help me figure out the best mattress type for us?

Thank you very much!

Nancy

Hi Nancy,

A Sleep Number bed sounds good in theory, but an air bag is poor support for anyone. If you don’t have a back problem when you get one, you will develop a back problem over time due to the lack of proper support.
The air bag is bad enough, but the memory foam upholstery only serves to make matters worse, as memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented, despite all of the sales hype to the contrary.

Having said all that, the most difficult body shape for attaining long lasting support and comfort is pear shaped.
Your weight at your height only serves to make all that more difficult.

Yours and your husband’s back pain will subside with my recommendation.
Since he’s so slender, weight is not an issue for him, so let’s focus on you.
With a mattress being a pressure sensitive product, it’ll be important for the mattress to be strong enough to withstand your compacted weight… and comfortable enough to give with your hip… using materials that are resilient enough to provide longevity.

A mattress and topper combination is critical for seeing to all of your needs.
Since your size will have the greatest impact, an expensive mattress will only turn out to be a waste of money. So, my recommendation is for:
The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress in Medium Firm.

The strong, individually pocketed coil system provides proper spinal support,
Maintaining the natural alignment of the body and spine.
THIS is the best you can do to relieve chronic back pain.
The pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery is the most resilient and most durable upholstery material available anywhere, and has been the best upholstery material for more than 100 years.
Here’s a link to that mattress:

The latex in the mattress is firm, so you’ll need a soft latex topper for surface comfort. The mattress is 11” thick, so I recommend a 3” topper…
A 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Dunlop Latex Topper.
The organic cotton zipper on cover this topper is optional, but recommended.
Here’s the link for those toppers:

Even soft latex is more resilient than any other type of foam.

But at your concentrated weight, your side of the mattress will wear long before your husband’s side.

The latex topper will absorb much of your weight and all of your husband’s weight, creating a situation where you only need to replace the topper in the years to come, and not the mattress.

If you happen to have a king size bed, you can further reduce your future costs by getting 2 twin xl instead of a king size.

This way, only your topper will need to be replaced when the time comes.

Thank Debbie for me.

And please, let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks, Pete - TME
