Hi Pete,
I am converting my daughter's crib into a full sized bed. I probably would've preferred a twin for her but we bought a pretty expensive set of furniture that matches the crib and I can't find a standalone bed that even comes close to matching the rest of the furniture and the bedroom is big enough so I just decided that the best approach was a full sized bed. I'm sure she'll be glad I did as she gets older.
Anyway, she is a preschooler and on the small side for her age. She probably will never be big -- my wife is 5'0" and barely over 100 lbs as an adult and it seems those are the genetics she's getting so that's the size of person I expect to need to support. Ideally I buy something once (now) and it lasts her through high school (i.e. almost 15 years) but if it doesn't, that's not the end of the world. Based on what I read from you it seems like something more on the plush side vs firm side would be appropriate, true? She is also short, as you might expect, so a lower profile might be good.
Do you have maybe a good/better/best kind of recommendation set that I can consider?
Also, a few quick logistical questions: I'm in south jersey (washington township, gloucester county) so there is no shipping charge to that area if I'm reading the site correctly, right? Also, what is a typical lead time for something like this? Anything else specific I need to know?
Thanks for your time, Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the novelette. It was well written and I enjoyed reading it.
However, your choice is a simple one.
A small child requires firm, contouring support that will continually adapt to a growing body. Since weight is not usually an issue at younger ages, there’s no need to spend a lot. But, quality and organic materials are important, since this is a long term purchase.
And, it’s incredibly important that you don’t expose your child to chemicals.
And, you certainly don’t want to have to replace it at anytime between now and when she leaves the nest.
For long term use, it will also be important to keep the mattress clean and dry. Since accidents are likely to happen on a repetitive basis, you might want to consider buying two waterproof mattress protectors. The one I recommend is made of organic cotton.
It’s the one we use at home, from Sleep & Beyond… shown here:

In about 10 years from now, usually around 12 years of age, a female child’s body will begin to develop. At that time it will become important to soften the surface of the mattress.
This is easily accomplished by adding a 2” Soft Organic Latex mattress topper.
Latex for Less, currently has the lowest prices on the highest quality pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex mattress toppers.

Be sure to order the organic cotton cover to go with it.
As for the mattress, your best option comes from Eco-Terra
Their Hybrid Latex Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation.
The individually pocketed coils ensure proper spinal alignment.
The pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery ensures longevity…. shown here:
