Hi Pete,
My husband and I sleep on the 3rd floor of our house which is accessed by a tight staircase with low head height that you can only fit a full size mattress.
We're going to treat ourselves to a bigger mattress and don't know what type is best.
We like a firm mattress and are planning on forgoing the box springs and building a platform to set the new mattress on.
We don't know whether it would be better to go for 2 twin xl innerspring mattresses on the platform or to look for a latex all foam which we assume could be folded over to get up our low head height stairs?
We have the space for either a queen or king once it gets up to our bedroom. From what I'm reading it seems like latex is the best choice? Do you think the two twin bed approach would work - if so do you have a recommendation for firm mattress. If we go the latex route, what would you recommend for $2,000 and is solid plywood better that slats for the platform?
We are average size people with no physical problems.
Thanks, Julie
Hi Julie,
There are many high quality innerspring mattresses that come shrink wrapped, rolled, boxed and shipped via UPS.
Such mattresses will easily fit up your stairs in their box.
You’ll unpack it once you get it there.
Your idea for a platform bed is a good one, but not necessary.
KD Foundations are available, that can be assembled in your bedroom. If building a platform bed, a solid 3/4” plywood base will be stronger and add to the firmness of the mattress.
You will also need to include a strong center support to keep the platform from bowing.
Here’s a link to our Magniflex KD Foundations.
They’re a bit dressy, upholstered in your choice of color and height.

If going with the Magniflex KD Foundation, you’ll also need a steel bed frame to support it.

An all latex mattress is not in your budget.
(Cheap latex mattresses from China are available. However the latex isn’t pure. Clay fillers are added to the mix, which cheapens the quality and shortens the longevity. Since clay is a natural material, these latex mattresses and toppers, that come out of China, are sold as all natural latex… highly deceptive.)
Pure latex mattresses are more expensive and last for many years.
“Latex for Less” has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex mattresses… available in your choice of thickness and firmness.

My first recommendation is for an innerspring mattress that’s upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex foam.
“PlushBeds” is a leading manufacturer for high quality mattresses.
Their Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation
