How Firm Should a Mattress be for a Side Sleeper?

How firm should a mattress be for a side sleeper is a FAQ.

While the question is a simple one, the answer is far more complex.

There’s more to a great night’s sleep than just surface comfort.

Put simply, your body has 2 parts… the inside and the outside.

Your skeletal system requires firm but contouring support, like the support you get from a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system.

And as a matter of simple physics, the heavier you are, the firmer that mattress needs to be if you want it to last long enough to give value to your purchase.

Once you have the adequate support, THEN you can focus on surface comfort.

Generally, back and stomach sleepers sleep better on a mattress with a firmer surface feel, while side sleepers will sleep better on a mattress with a softer surface.

The degree of firmness or softness will greatly depend on the shape of the body.

More softness of your wider at the hip and/or shoulder… less so for those who are more slenderly built.

So many of today’s mattresses are upholstered with some sort of memory foam, which can be very comfortable at first, but less so over a too short period of time.

Most are made of chemicals that are toxic and off gas those toxic chemicals… adding insult to injury.

All of the, so called, Name Brands that you could once trust for quality, have been sold and are now using memory for.

The type of upholstery that lasts the longest is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam, which is chemical free.

None of this information is helpful in deciding which mattress to buy.

However, if you buy a basic mattress, you can add a latex topper to it should you need more surface comfort.

Why not just buy a pillowtop mattress?

A mattress is a pressure sensitive product that wears with time.

How much time depends on three things:

The quality of the components in the mattress.

The weights of the people using it.

How well you take care of your mattress.

The first thing to wear in a pillowtop mattress is the pillowtop, regardless of how well you take care of it.

Once the pillowtop starts to flatten out, your degree of comfort begins to wane.

Buying a basic mattress and adding a removable topper allows you to replace the topper as needed without having to buy a new mattress. Using a pure latex topper lasts for many years.

And because pure latex is so resilient, it absorbs much to all of your body weight, which further extends the life of your mattress… increasing the dollar for dollar value of your purchase.

(NOTE: Beware of buying cheap latex that’s made in China.

It isn’t pure. The fillers they add cause them to wear quickly.

You can usually tell by the price.)
