Sinking Into a New Mattress, Back Pain.

 Eric writes:

Hi Pete,

I just purchased a Queen mattress that feels fairly firm but it has a softer padding that I feel like I sink into. I have only sleept on it for two nights the first night I woke up at 3am. The second night my lower back started to hurt enough to be noticeable for the entire day.

I am tall, 6'4" and am always reaching end to end. I am use to a bed without any toppers. I now have buyers remorse because.

I have mixed feelings. I would be much happier if my back was happy, like it was before the new bed.

It feels comfortable when you first lie down which was probably my mistake that and it being on sale for half off.

Would you recommend giving it time or get a different mattress.

if so what would you reccommend looking for?

I hope this isnt a waste of your time seeing as it may very well go away and I’ll be perfectly fine.

Thanks, Eric

Hi Eric,

You bought a mattress upholstered with memory foam.

That “sinking in” feeling only comes with memory foam, which is the worst upholstery material ever invented.

Memory foam is temperature sensitive…softening as it warms from your body heat. It won’t get better with time…quite the opposite.

You have 2 options:

  1. Add a latex topper, which will insulate you from the memory foam. This will prevent the memory foam from reacting to your body heat. Subsequently, you’ll stop sinking into it.
  2. Buy a new mattress with latex instead of memory foam.

The best value for each category uses the highest quality…Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex

AND:

You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation.

Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress.

If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray.

They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed.

They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced.

Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials.

Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity.

The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home.

It sleeps cool and works well.
