A Mattress for a Child with Sciatica Nerve Pain.

 Lisa writes:

Hi Pete,

My 7 year old daughter has a pudendal nerve issue and because of it has lower back spasms and sometimes some sciatica nerve pain issues.

I would really like to find out what mattress would work the best for her as I know from my own back issues that the wrong mattress causes more problems. For my back issues a softer latex foam mattress has worked the best, however with her spine still forming I have heard that an all foam mattress' is not the best for children. Can you please let me know what mattress would be the best for this situation?

Thank you, Lisa

Hi Lisa,

For most children, an all latex mattress is perfect…but not for children with the back issues your daughter has.

An individually pocketed coil system is best…providing firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. This type of support is best for relieving her pain.

A mattress like this that upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam will provide comfort and longevity.

The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation…a mattress that will provide the proper support and comfort she’ll need…and last until she’s grown and gone.

Here’s a link to that mattress.

You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation.

Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress.

If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray.

They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed.

They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced.

Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials.

Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free.

The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home.

It sleeps cool and works well.
