Hi Peter,
We currently have a king size memory foam pillow top mattress that is only a few years old but is already sagging. I have two herniated discs and lower back pain, especially at night. I sleep on my side and am 5'4" 120 lbs. We are looking for a firmer mattress. Is it true that a king size is almost always going to sink more than a queen? It's on 2 twin box springs to fit through the doors. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Maura
Hi Maura,
A king size will wear as you describe since the people sleeping on it will sleep further apart. The center remains like new for that reason.
The firmer support where the 2 boxsprings meet is also a contributing factor.
However, your problem is more a result of the memory foam.
In contrast to all of the sales hype that caused you to buy that mattress, memory foam is an extremely poor quality upholstery material, evidenced by the fact that it’s sagging under your weight.
In short, you have a lousy quality mattress…on top of the fact that it’s also the wrong type of mattress for your condition.
You have to understand that the current batch of mattress salespeople are trained only to sell a mattress.
It’s not like the old days when they received extensive training on the components of their mattresses and how they worked.
Today, it’s all about extraction the most amount of money from the customer and saying anything to make the sale.
Your herniated discs require the pushback support of an individually pocketed coil system to hold your back up in its natural alignment.
No all foam mattress will do that…least of all, memory foam.
Memory foam softens as it warms from your body’s heat, which allows you to sink into it, which throws off your spine’s alignment.
The result is back pain…and usually worse than before.
The right mattress will have the aforementioned coil system and natural latex upholstery, which also holds you up.
Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam creates the unique feeling that you’re floating…not allowing you to sink.
My recommendation is for a mattress with all the correct components…The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress.

And now, let’s address the way a king size wears and how to work around it. A standard king is almost square…square enough that when you rotate the mattress, rotate it 1/4 turn.
Do this every month for the first year and every 3 months thereafter.
This trick works well to ensure that your mattress wears evenly.
