Why Does My New Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress Have a Strong Chemical Odor?

Hi Pete,

I came across your blog as I was searching for the reason why my new mattress has a strong chemical odor. 
I hope you can provide some advice.
We bought a king size Simmons Beautyrest Black L-class extra firm mattress, recently.
It arrived with a strong chemical smell, which we have been trying to air out by keeping our windows open. 
The smell is not as strong now, but it’s not completely gone. 
We’ve been airing it out for 11 days now, so more than a week, but not quite 2 weeks.  
I would like to know if it’s normal for this mattress to smell when it’s newly out of the box, or if it’s defective. 
If it’s normal to have some off gassing in the beginning, how much longer do we have to air it out?

The off gassing is the release of toxic chemicals into the air….carcinogenic chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene…just to name two of the 61 chemicals used to make the memory foam in your mattress.

There are mattresses made without memory foam, without the toxic off gassing, that won’t wear out quickly, as memory foam has a habit of doing.
Those toxins are trapped inside the cellular structure of the memory foam.
As you use it, more of those cells will open, releasing more toxins into the air.
Sinus headache is the most common side effect, as these chemicals attack the respiratory system. 
There are reports of much more serious side effects.
Not only is memory foam a poor quality product, it’s also a health hazard.
No mattress upholstered with memory foam is worth buying.
If the store where you bought it offers a refund, I suggest availing yourself of that.
