Back Pain on a Tempur-Pedic Mattress.

Cindy writes:

Hi Pete,

We are now trying a Tempur-Pedic mattress.
I have had a horrible time getting used to it myself and still suffering from being too hot with night sweats.
AND, I'm waking up every day with back pain in my entire back.
We've been told that the only thing we can do is exchange for a different Tempur-Pedic model.
We've had this one for about 25 days.
My sister-in-law bought a Natura all-latex mattress from you, several years ago, and loves it.
We are sad and frustrated-don't know what to do.
What product do you recommend for dealing with night sweats?
Thanks, Cindy
Hi Cindy,
Memory foam...the main product in a Tempur-Pedic and introduced by Tempur-Pedic about 20 years ago...has proven itself to be the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.
This means that as it warms from the body heat you give off, it softens and you sink into it.
It takes your body's heat and reflects it back to you, making you hot.
And, the loss of support from softening is terrible for anyone with a pre-existing back problem.
If you have a back problem, of which you are unaware, memory foam will make you aware of it.
If you don't have a back problem and sleep on memory foam long enough, you will develop a back problem.
And, as if all that wasn't bad enough, there's more.
Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals...some of which, are highly toxic.
It off-gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made, presenting a health hazard to everyone in your home.
Headache is the most common negative side effect of this. It also attacks your respiratory system...terrible for anyone with asthma, or any other sort of breathing problem.
The worst negative side effect, that I've had reported to me, is bleeding sinuses.
My recommendation is to get rid of it.
It is nothing more than expensive junk.
Moving forward, stay away from any mattress upholstered with memory foam.
Natural Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years.
If you would like to enjoy your night's sleep as much as your sister-in-law does, get an all-latex mattress.
The Natura of Canada All Latex Mattresses are what we recommend.
The Blossom Plush model is the most popular.
