Hi Pete,

My husband (180 lbs. 5'10”) suffers from chronic lower back pain, and we have tried EVERYTHING.
I don’t have any issues. I am 5’3” 135lbs and we are both side sleepers.
We believe we need something on the firm side, as we are currently sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic mattress.
What would be your recommendation for us?
Thank you so much in advance, Nickie
Hi Nickie,
Like so many of my customers, you’ve tried “everything” that’s being advertised.
And along with so many of my customers, you’ve leapt to the conclusion that you don’t have the right degree of firmness.
You’re thinking that in order for your husband’s chronic back pain to be addressed, you’ll have to deal with a firmer mattress as a compromise…which will make you less comfortable, but you’re willing to make the sacrifice for his sake.
You’ll be happy to learn that none of that is true.
What your husband is lacking is the proper support.
An all foam mattress, especially a memory foam mattress, is the direct cause of his chronic pain not going away. That same type of support, made firmer, won’t solve his problem and will only create a discomfort problem for you.
You don’t have to take my word on this.
You can see for yourselves by simply flipping your Tempurpedic mattress over to its firmer side.
His back pain will be less, but not go away. And you will be uncomfortable.
The degree of firmness needed is based on body weight.
He isn’t heavy enough to need a really firm mattress.
What he does need is a mattress with the right components…which your Tempurpedic does not have.
An individually pocketed coil mattress provides the right support for relief of chronic back pain.
But if that mattress is upholstered with memory foam, it will soon result in his back pain returning.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.
Once it softens, you sink into it, which will cause your spine to again become misaligned.
And, as if that’s not bad enough, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made…creating a whole new health hazard.
The kind of mattress he needs is one that has an individually pocketed coil unit and no memory foam upholstery. The Brolynn Old Fashioned Two-Sided Mattress in Plush has support that is firm enough to relieve his chronic back pain, and still be comfortable enough for a female side sleeper.

Using an old box spring to support any new mattress will cause premature wear and void the manufacturer’s warranty.
A waterproof mattress protector will extend the life of a mattress by keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry.
