How does a parent shop for a mattress for their children?

Hi Peter,

How does a parent shop for a mattress for their children?
I have several questions.
Thanks for your time and expertise.
These days, it’s important to know what to avoid.
Most of today’s mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.
Memory foam is thee thing to avoid.
Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals, some of which are highly toxic.
The two most dangerous are formaldehyde and benzene.
A memory foam mattress will off gas these chemicals, which attack the respiratory system.
Memory foam wears quickly and doesn’t maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine.
Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material made. It reacts to the body’s heat, absorbing it and reflecting it back…causing the user to sleep hot.
Here are the answers to your questions:
* What should parents consider when shopping for a mattress for kids?
It’s important to maintain anyone’s natural body alignment.
A mattress with an individually pocketed coil will do that and continually adapt to a child’s growing body.
* What size mattress should parents look for when it comes to kids?
If you have the space in the bedroom, a full or queen size is most versatile.
If the parents are tall, so the child will be as well.
The extra length of a queen size, along with choosing a quality mattress, will prevent having to replace the mattress in coming years.
* What mattress firmness is best?
A school age child will remember their lessons better, the more deeply they sleep.
Every body requires some degree of firm support and some degree of surface softness. Firm support with Plush comfort layers.
* How thick should a kids' mattress be?
The thicker the mattress, the sooner it will wear out.
Too much upholstery is just as bad as too little.
The axiom, “The more expensive, the better it must be” has the opposite effect when applied to buying a mattress…for child or adult.
The exception to this rule is an all latex mattress…expensive, but worth it.
I don’t recommend a latex mattress for children with spine issues, like scoliosis.
I don’t recommend a latex mattress for older adults, either.
I have a grandson growing up on a pure latex mattress.

Most good quality mattresses are no thicker than 12”.
* How long can you keep a kids' mattress?
As long as the child is sleeping well.
The right choice should last a child until they are grown and gone.
Many such choices, later become an excellent spare room bed.
* Is it worth it to get a flippable kids' mattress?
A flippable two sided mattress has extra longevity, provided that you flip it regularly.
The optimum care for a two sided mattress is:
Flip it once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter.
Also, you must alternate how you flip the mattress…side to side and head to foot.
Proper care will insure that the mattress wears evenly for maximum comfort life.
