I was about to purchase a Sealy Mattress from Costco.

Hi Pete,

I am in the market for a new mattress and came across your blog.
I was just about to pull the trigger on purchasing a Sealy Mattress from Costco.
Now after reading everything, I’m totally confused and afraid to make a bad choice.
My previous mattress purchase was over 10 years ago, so when I learned that the recent Sealy mattresses contained memory foam, I became concerned because whenever I sleep in memory foam, I wake up in a pool of sweat. I live in the desert and even when I turn the air down to 70 degrees, I still toss and turn and wake up hot, so memory foam is a no-go for me. I can’t even use the toppers.
These are my points:
I am a combination sleeper; I always start on my back, but eventually have to flip onto my side when my hips start to ache.
I have lower back issues due to previous surgery on my right hip. My hips and back tend to ache on a too-soft mattress; but my feet and legs fall asleep in a too-firm mattress.
I also have neck and shoulder issues due to a previous neck fracture and the fact that I am a swimmer. This is my biggest issue recently… waking up with shoulders aching and actually cracking and popping back into place once I get up and get moving in the morning.
As I mentioned previously, I live in a desert environment and am a hot sleeper anyway.
I am a large person at 6 feet tall and 250 pounds.
I am also concerned about the off-gassing of products containing memory foam.
I used to do a lot of travel and my favorite hotel bed by far was the Westin Heavenly bed. I liked the firmness of the mattress with the soft cushy pillow top.
I have researched other mattresses that sounded perfect, but are way out of my price range at $3,000 and having to buy rails that won’t go with my current bed.
I have also looked over the Wolf mattresses you recommend, which sound much more in my price range.
I like the idea of going back to an old fashioned flippable mattress that will last longer.
I am confused as to which one to choose (Brolynn versus Brandy-Lynn?
I don’t see the difference in the two and whether I should choose firm versus plush.
My ideal would probably be a medium-firm.
Also, can my previous box spring be used with a Wolf mattress?
I didn’t see an option to purchase a foundation on the website.
So, my question is what sort of mattress set up would you recommend for me?
I would appreciate your help!
ThanksKris
Hi Kris,
Since you’ve done so much reading, I won’t repeat myself…except to say that all of your physical ailments will be made worse by a mattress upholstered with memory foam.
That said, the best you can hope for is to make yourself as comfortable as possible.
No mattress will solve any of your physical problems, but there are some that will help you sleep better by alleviating some of the pain.
At your size, the question becomes a matter of duration.
Given your economic situation, the last thing you need is to waste the money you have to spend.
The Westin Heavenly Bed is a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.
The key to your comfort, while staying at the Westin Hotel, is the individually pocketed coils containing to the shape of your body, which maintains the natural alignment of your spine.
However, their coils are not tempered and all of today’s Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.
My recommendation for you comes in three parts…due to your size.
1). You cannot use your 10 year old box spring.
Doing so will cause premature wear and will void the warranty of any mattress you use with it. I recommend going to Costco to buy a new box spring.
That is one of the places that have the best prices for that item.
Shipping a box spring is expensive, making it cost a lot more than it’s worth.
2). The Wolf Brandy-Lynn Mattress.
This mattress uses the same type of coil system that is in the Simmons Beautyrest.
The steel used to make the coils are heavier gauge and double tempered.
This will provide you the type of support your body needs and the durability you’re looking for.

3.) Add to that mattress a Latex Mattress Topper.
Given your descriptions, your best option is from Natura of Canada.

2” of soft latex will provide long lasting comfort that is not too soft.
The latex topper has a dual purpose…surface comfort and added longevity for the mattress.
Latex is extremely resilient, absorbing much of your body weight, which in turn, prevents the mattress from wearing as it normally would without it.
Both, the mattress and latex topper ship via UPS.
Delivery is Free.
Thanks, Pete
