Hi Lee,

There’s a white label sewn into one of the seams at the head of the mattress.

It says, “Do not remove under penalty of law”.

It’s known as 'the law label'.

That label has the date of manufacture.

One of the great things about that mattress is that it’s actually two mattresses.

The top side has some poly foam, which is what has worn.

The flip side is the latex core.

Flip it over. 

It’s likely to be a bit too firm on that side, so use what you have to soften it a bit…like a comforter.

On average, there’s a good 5 years of additional comfortable sleep to be had without having to buy a new mattress.

I’m thinking firm might be ok, maybe good for side sleeping / crooked hips? 

The soft poly foam on the normal top side appears to be in good shape. 

But overall, things have gotten a little squishy, support-wise.

The texture on the bottom (soon to be top) side is a little weird but that’s ok.  

Do you think I should consider a latex mattress topper on that side or just go for it as is?

I am totally absorbed by your blog!

Hi Lee,

The best way to soften it IS with a latex for long term use.

Wait until you’ve slept on the underside for a couple of nights.

You can better decide if you’re going to continue to use it that way. 

And if so, how much more softness you’re going to need. i.e...2" 3", soft or medium soft.
