Hi Pete,
My husband and I are needing a new mattress.
We have a ton of mattress stores close by and were shopping for a new one on Saturday.
So overwhelming.
We have been very happy with pillow top beds.
Our current mattress is a Thomasville Pillowtop that has wool on one side and silk on the other.
We've had it for around 25 years. We only sleep on the silk side. The wool is just too hot for us.
Before that, we had what I think was a Serta pillowtop that we also loved.
We only changed beds because that was a queen and we sleep in a king now.
I'm about 5'3" and 130lbs. My husband is 5'11" and 330lbs.
My husband doesn't sleep well and we think it's probably because of our mattress.
He keeps rolling onto his back and then that wakes him up. He sleeps with a cpap.
When out shopping this weekend, we liked the Airloom Plus Luxetop - Hayworth and Monroe.
We also liked the Intellibed Midnight.
These beds are all more money than we paid for all three of our kids' first cars (individually).
I also was looking at the avocado mattresses. I love the idea of an organic mattress.
I've seen some great reviews and some poor reviews.
I love a soft bed that has medium firmness underneath the pillowtop. This whole shopping experience is making me nervous.
We even looked at sleep number beds. I'm not sold on those..
What do you recommend?
It looks like you recommend a firm mattress with a latex topper but your best latex toppers are having supply chain problems. I would love to buy a long lasting mattress that also has softness to it and is healthy (won't bug our allergies)
Also, what is your opinion on box springs vs adjustable platforms with no box springs?
We've always used box springs but the idea of an adjustable platform is interesting.
Lastly,, these mattress dealers state these are beds you no longer flip over, you can only rotate them.
I'm also not used to that.
Thank you, Heather
Hi Heather,
You’re headed for disaster on a couple of levels and need a head’s up.
All of the name brands that you could once trust to make a quality mattress have been sold to investors who are now focusing on profits only.
1) You’re, literally, stepping out of a time warp.
It sounds like you’re supposing that your buying experience will be the same as it was 25 years ago.
25 years ago it was nearly impossible to buy a bad mattress.
Today, quite the opposite is true. Why?
25 years ago memory foam did not exist.
Today, almost every mattress is upholstered with memory foam.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…and not under the terms of the warranty.
Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from the body heat you give off. As it softens, you sink into it, which eliminates the natural alignment of your spine….causing back pain.
Memory foam sleeps hot and causes your extremities to go numb, cutting off your circulation.
After you sink into memory, you’ll find it most difficult to change position.
Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some, of which, are highly toxic and carcinogenic.
If Organic appeals to you, memory foam is the antithesis of that.
2) You and your husband have different needs.
The feel you describe as wanting will not wear well on your husband’s side of the bed under his weight.
I’m assuming that separate beds is not an option.
This will require some compromise on your part unless you’re prepared to put out the money for a new mattress every couple/few years.
When shopping for a mattress, the first request for the salespeople is to have them show you mattresses with no memory foam in them.
Each mattress has a label at the head of the mattress, which tells you, by percentage, what upholstery materials are used in that mattress.
Important because today’s salespeople are poorly trained to know anything more than how to close the sale.
In many cases, a salesperson either doesn’t know what’s in the mattresses they sell or are happy to lie about it…telling you anything you need to hear to make the sale.
The Avocado mattress uses natural latex and has no memory foam in them.
Unfortunately, their coil unit is made for comfort and not durability.
It’ll never wear well under a person your husband’s size.
My recommendation comes in two parts.
1) A mattress that’s strong and durable enough to last under 330 lbs.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring Plush Mattress
Click on this link to view specifications and prices.
Due to the high quality of the components, this mattress is not very plush.
It won’t have the feel you want.
Add to that mattress a Suite Sleep 2” Soft Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Topper.
Shown here:
Together, they provide the support, comfort and longevity you’ll need and want.
In several years, all that will need replacing will be the latex topper.
Latex is the most resilient upholstery material on the planet.
It’ll absorb much of his body weight, which greatly extends the life of the mattress.
Delivery is FREE and there’s NO Sales Tax.
Platform beds are fine, as long as they have the proper center supports.
Adjustable beds have very little therapeutic value. A big expense for little return.
If you'd like to tilt the bed to make it easier for your husband to breathe, I recommend using bed risers.
Like the ones shown here:
Thanks, Pete
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
