Hi Pete,
I live in Winnipeg Canada.
We bought a new Simmons Beautyrest unity lux for $2000 from a local store.
It is comfortable but the smell of the off gassing is causing headaches. I have a chemical sensitivity.
We cannot return it but only can exchange it. We had them remove our very old comfortable mattress.
We are taking off the mattress cover and linens every day to air out.
But I am concerned this could take months.
Do you have any suggestions for a mattress protector that will protect me while sleeping?
I read that polyethylene blocks toxic smells.
We are debating about exchanging it but are afraid we may run into the same problem.
Any advice….. wait it out? Exchange?
I noticed you have a mattress protector but not sure it would block out the chemical smell.
Thanks in advance.
LindaHi Linda,
Your best solution is a zipper-on dust mite encasement.
It does nothing to protect you from dust mites, but should help with your problem.
Return for refund is your best option, but might take a law suit for selling a poisonous product to pull it off.
I’m curious. What made you replace the old mattress if it was still comfortable? Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete,
Our mattress was 34 years old and I was having mild back pain.
My GP said it was time to change my mattress. I did not do enough research.
I was told we could exchange for a floor model Tempurpedic medium, which may have off gassed already but was in someone's house and has been disinfected. On the floor for one month.
We could check it out.
If we looked into a completely new mattress, what would you suggest?
LindaHi Linda,
That Tempurpedic will make your back pain worse.
Don’t bother exchanging it. They have nothing worth owning.
Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
It’s specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
The toxic chemical off gassing just adds insult to injury.
You’re better off getting rid of that mattress and getting one with no memory foam in it.
Take the financial loss before it hurts you physically, which it will.
Here’s a link to the mattress my wife and I sleep on at home.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush provides excellent support, comfort and longevity.
The primary upholstery is Natural Talalay Latex, and contains NO Memory Foam.

Hi Pete,
Thank you for the good advice.
We are in the process of trying to minimize the problem by exchanging for a Kingsdown Duet with a more organic cover and if that is bad will then cut our losses and look at the one you suggested.
Also, there is a store in Winnipeg Aviva that carries organic options. I will look at that this week.
Our fault for not being more aware of this industry.
Thank you for your help.
LindaHi Linda
An organic cover won’t protect you from any memory foam in the mattress.
Try to get a mattress with no memory foam. Thanks, Pete
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
