Back Pain on a Pure Latex Bliss Active Fusion mattress?

Cyrene writes:

Hello Pete,

About 6-7 years ago my husband and I purchased a 10" Pure Latex Bliss Active Fusion mattress.
My husband feels as if there is some "sagging" and he feels that the bed is giving him back pain.
I think it is the 1" foam topper we put on top to make it softer.
He feels he needs coils in the mattress to give him support when lying on his side.
He is talking about buying a new mattress.
He is interested in the Aireloom Holland Copper Tech Firm Luxetop mattress.
It is very expensive and I really don't think there is anything wrong with our current bed.
I'm pretty sure the Pure Bliss doesn't have coils though.
Are coils necessary? Or is that just a personal preference?

I am a back/side sleeper and do not feel as if the bed is sagging.
I would like it to be softer, as it feels a little firm to me.
I was hoping the latex bliss would last for much longer than 6-7 years as it was pretty expensive.
How would I be able to tell by looking at it, if it was sagging?
Do we need a hybrid mattress? A new topper?
What would make the latex bliss more comfortable for both of us?
Should I just give up on the idea and buy a new mattress?

Thank you for your help
Regards, Cyrene

Hi Cyrene,
Wow! What an enormous waste of money, that Aireloom mattress is!
The coil count is low and the upholstery is memory foam.
After spending all that money, you’ll need to replace it in a year or two.
You won’t do that because it cost so much.
So you’ll live with the pain and discomfort for a few years longer.

An individually pocketed coil unit provides pushback support against the spine that no all foam mattress provides.
It’s particularly good for people who are suffering from back pain due to disc damage, because it maintains the natural alignment of the spine.
If it’s an innerspring he needs, you won’t get much use from that Aireloom mattress.

You’re right about the time you should get from a Pure Bliss all latex mattress.
So, let’s determine if he really does need a new mattress before going off half cocked and ending up in worse shape than he’s in now.

First things first. Take the topper off the mattress and check the mattress for a sag.
Sleep on the mattress without the topper.
If he’s not feeling any better tomorrow, flip the mattress over and sleep on the flip side tomorrow night.
If his back is better, then all you’ll need is a new topper.
If not, then a good innerspring is needed.

When buying a new mattress, you need to buy one with no memory foam in it.
“The more it costs, the better it must be”, is a foolish way to think about this.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you need a new mattress, I recommend the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.
It's the same one my wife and I sleep on at home.
Ours is still in like new condition after more than 5.5 years, with each weighing more than 200 lbs.
I have a very bad back and this mattress allows me to sleep and wake without back pain.

The coil count is much higher. The steel is double tempered for durability.
The upholstery is natural Talalay Latex...far superior to memory foam.

If you determine that a new latex topper is all you need, I recommend the Suite Sleep Organic Latex Topper.
It comes 2” or 3” in Soft....the 3" providing a greater degree of surface comfort

The topper ships via ups.
The mattress comes with white glove delivery.
Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.

Thanks, Pete
