Joint Pain, Swollen Hands and Feet on Stearns and Foster and Serta Mattresses.

Maryellen writes:

Hello Pete,

I hope you get this, as I don't know if you are still writing back to people.
I hope you are because I’m desperate!
We need a mattress, and having a hard time finding one that I think will work.

For many years, almost last 8 we slept on a Stearns and Foster Joy.
I always woke with joint pain and what felt like swollen hands and feet on that mattress.
We moved and we were temporarily living somewhere else on a different mattress.
It was a Sealy Posturepedic Hotel version, an old school one, that was purchased about 12 years ago.
I realized, after a few nights, the pain and swollen hands and feet was gone. Coincidence?
Well, we moved to our new home and I started to sleep on the S&F again.
The same pain and swollen hands and feet started happening again. So, we bought a new mattress.
I couldn’t find the Sealy that we were sleeping on, it’s not for sale anywhere.
So, we went with Serta Kleinmon II Plush.
It’s a nice mattress but I’m still waking up with the same issues that I had with our S&F!
Both the S&F and the Serta have this plush quilted top that I’m thinking might be the problem?
The Sealy did not have that. It was a tight shiny like material.
Anyway, we are looking for ideas as what to try now.
We have a Tempurpedic in our guest room that I hate, so nothing with foam would be ideal.
Something natural with no gels and stuff, a spring / coil design is what I think we would like, and firm.
I wish I could find the Sears mattress I grew up sleeping on. That was great!!
I hope you respond!! We need help!
Thanks, Maryellen

Hi Maryellen,
Before you can solve any problem, that problem needs to be identified.
Thus far, you haven’t done that. You’re close. It’s about the foam, but not all foams are the same. That hotel Sealy has foam, but a different kind.
The problem is the memory foam...specifically in the comfort layers.

Memory foam, and only memory foam, is temperature sensitive.
It softens as it warms from your body heat.
Once softened, you sink into it. That alone throws off the natural alignment of the spine. Only the heavier parts of the body sink, leaving your extremities with poor blood circulation.

Memory foam causes a mattress to need frequent replacing.
For that reason, most hotels buy older versions of Sealy and Simmons mattresses.
Sealy and Simmons make mattresses for hotels without memory foam in the comfort layers.
You’ve already experienced the difference.
Mattresses made for hotels are not available at any retail stores.
There’s only 2 ways to buy one....from hotels that sell mattresses, for which you will pay a premium price....or, from Sealy’s Hospitality Division directly.

Here is the contact information you’ll need to do just that.

Thanks for the contact information, Pete.
How are they able to purchase older models? Are they still in stock someplace?
I also thought I read a post from you saying that Tempurpedic bought Sealy? Or was it Serta?
And they are not a super great mattress anymore.
Also, a little more about me. I weigh 115 lbs and I have been tested for RA and joint issues, all negative.
So, it has to be the mattress!
Does the layer that some companies seem to put on top now make a difference?
It’s like a plushie quilted type, not a pillow top though.
The Hotel version had a tight shiny like material, not plushie at all!
Again, thanks for all your expert insight!!
Maryellen

Hi Maryellen,
I am not able to purchase older models.
Sealy makes them the old way for hotels that have rejected the use of memory foam.
If you buy one, you’ll be buying from Sealy directly.
They have 3 models. Describe to Sharrie, the feel you’re looking for.

All of the name brands have been sold.
Simmons Beautyrest and Serta were purchased by the same investment group.
Sealy had purchased Stearns & Foster a very long time ago.
It was their high end line, with Posturepedic being much more affordable.
They even had a low end line, called Posture Premier.

We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years.
We dropped both lines when Tempurpedic bought them both, in 2013.

All of these name brand mattress manufacturers are upholstering all of their mattresses with memory foam.
Even the old, low end Sealy Posture Premier mattresses were better made than anything produced today, by these and many other brands that have turned to using memory foam.

The key to a successful purchase is in finding mattresses that have no memory foam in them.
Even the Sealy hotel mattresses have a little: a high density 1/2” layer of memory foam, sandwiched between two high density 1/2” layers of polyurethane foam.
It’s a support layer, positioned just above the coils.
The comfort layers above that are polyurethane foams.

Polyurethane had been the standard upholstery material since the early 1970s, with some older bores hair & cotton batting mattresses still being produced.
Memory foam made its debut around the turn of the century.
At that time, only Tempurpedic was producing a memory foam mattress...memory foam atop a support layer of high density polyurethane.
The were selling on shopping network channels.

I remember the original commercials.
A hand pressed into the foam, held there for a couple of seconds, taken away...
...and the hand print remained in the foam.
I remember thinking at the time, “Who, in their right mind, would think that’s a good idea?!”.
Well, they spent millions telling you that it was the answer to all your sleeping problems.

I must confess, I’m not really smarter than anyone else.
But I did have the advantage of being raised and taught by a man who held two engineering degrees...
...way back when kids were actually raised and taught.

Without that background, I may have fallen for all that nonsense, especially when they were offering a 90 Days money back guarantee....”The Hook”.
Like anything else, it feels just fine when it’s new.
For way too many people, the love affair ended a few months later...after the comfort guarantee expired.

Well, once somebody starts something like that, everybody turns into
Jimmy Durante....and to get in on the act. (In case you were wondering how old I am).
And so, most all retailers offer that, which continues to be a scam.

Anyway,
Most, by far, of all the memory foams being used, is toxic.
It off gasses the formaldehyde and benzene, along with the other 59 chemicals that it takes to produce it.
Besides being a poor quality product, it’s also a health hazard.
Some chemical free, plant based memory foam is being produced.
And while it won’t add insult to injury, the injury remains.

So, before you do anything else, flip your mattress over.
The memory foam will be on the underside, where it can’t continue to add to your discomfort.
The flip side will be firmer...too firm for most.
Add a comforter or anything else you have to soften it.
You’ll be in less pain, and the swelling will go away, while you wait for your new mattress to arrive.
Given your petiteness, and your desire for a firmer feel, you may not need to buy a mattress right now.

You’ll know tomorrow.

Thanks, Pete

Thanks Pete,
I appreciate all the info! I had no idea how bad memory foam was!
We have been sleeping on the new mattress for 30 days, now.
I'm at the point where I can call and have them take it back, as the 30 day sleep trial is up, which is great! Hence the reason I needed some help with what to get next.
You have been a wealth of knowledge!
Thanks, Maryellen
