Hi Neve,
"Good ole fashion" is a relative term. Your frame of reference depends on how old you are.
Here's an overview that might answer your question.
The original coil systems were introduced in the 1920s.
All of the name brands that you could once trust for quality, have been sold to investors who care nothing about quality...just profits.
The Bonnell coil was an hour glass shaped coil, made of very heavy wire and all the coils were tied together.
The individually pocketed coil is a barrel shape, with each coil moving independently from the others.
Both are still being made.
The Bonnell coil unit is very hard to find...usually offered by some of the hundreds of small local manufacturers...scattered about the country.
The individually pocketed coils are offered by all the name brands.
The thing to avoid, is the memory foam upholstery that so many mattress manufacturers are using, which is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
Latex has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years...also introduced in the 1920s.
However, quality latex was, and still is, expensive.
Almost all mattresses, made from the 1920s up to the early 1970s, were upholstered with horse hair and cotton batting.
Polyurethane was invented in the late 1960s and became the primary upholstery material until about 10 years ago.
Poly foam provided a feel, not dissimilar to latex, although not with the same longevity not as high a cost.
Memory foam was introduced about 20 years ago, and has since taken over as the primary upholstery material...not for its quality, but for the profits it generates.
It is the worst upholstery material ever invented.
Thanks, Pete
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
