Softening a Simmons Beautyrest Black L-Class Medium Firm Mattress.

John writes:

Dear Pete,

You have helped my wife and I over the years in determining what mattress would be best for us.
We ordered a 2 inch talalay topper from you, which gave us a few extra years with our older Stearns and Foster.
We are very grateful for that.

We have been considering buying the Silver Beautyrest medium firm and continuing to use the topper with that.
Quite spontaneously, the other day, while at a store, we found the Black L-Class medium firm.

While we realized that you recommended that bed for much heavier people than us, we thought we would give it a try.
I weigh only 130# and my wife is about 135#.

The first night we both found the bed hard as a rock, even with our latex topper.
The next night we found that there was a bit more give.
I am happy because I was waking up quite sore, every day, and my body likes the firm feeling.
My wife complained of a sore neck and hip and is not used to, or happy about, the firmness and lack of a luxurious feel. However, she slept a bit better and agrees that it seems to be softening up a bit and it might just need break-in time and time for us to get used to it.

We have a couple of questions for you.
While we understand that the Black is overkill for our size needs, we did get a great deal and it is already here.
Is the Black medium firm considerably more firm than the Silver medium firm?
Would it make a difference for us at our weights?
Is this how it will be or will it soften enough for my wife to be happier with our purchase?
We can give it more time or make a change now.
We would truly appreciate your guidance.
Thanks, John

Hi John,
At your weights, that mattress with a latex topper should never need to be replaced.
Buys, like that one, don’t come along every day. I’m happy for you.
Since your wife’s experience is improving every night, logic dictates that you hang on to it and see how her quality of sleep progresses.
Mattresses tend to be stiff, at first, but do loosen up with use.

Frankly, if a change is to be made, opting for a cheaper made mattress makes less sense than going with thicker latex topper.
If money needs to be spent, going up in quality is always better than going down.

My wife and I, recently traded our old 2” latex topper for a 3”.
Both of us are sleeping more comfortably.
Here the link to what we have...the Pure Bliss 3” Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper:

Shipping is free and there's no sales tax.

Thanks, Pete
