The Difference Between Memory Foam and Latex Mattresses.

Hi Pete,
Thank you for all the great information on your blog and website.
I am in the UK. I will look out for latex foam, but unsure if I can get it over here.
Can you explain to me why memory foam is no good??
And, what is the difference between memory foam and latex foam mattresses, please?
Cheers, Laura

Hi Laura,
Pure Talalay Bliss has a plant in London.
You can get a latex mattress through them...or one of their retailers in the UK.

Latex and memory foam are like night & day, the antithesis of one another.
Latex works well and lasts for many years.
Memory foam barely works and quits working within a very short time.
Latex is natural originating with the sap from the rubber tree.
And with a chemical free process, is whipped into a foam that has been the best upholstery material you can buy for the past 100 years. There is absolutely nothing new about this.

Memory foam was introduced 20 years ago and has proven itself to be thee worst upholstery material ever invented.
Unlike latex, memory foam is a temperature sensitive material. It will soften as it warms from your body's heat.
You'll then sink into it, and, within a short while sink through it as though it weren't even there.
Once it absorbs your body heat, it reflects it back to you.
Memory foam, even with gel that is supposed to cool it, is the hottest sleeping surface on the planet.

Sleeping hot is but one of the negative side effect of memory foam.
Once it softens and you sink into it, you can't move or change position with fully waking up....
...not to mention climbing out of that hole in the morning.
Because it sinks so far, it throws off the natural alignment of your spine and causes back pain.

And as bad as all that sounds, that's not the worst thing about memory foam.
Memory foam is a chemical based product, which includes many toxic chemicals...like Benzene and Formaldehyde, just to name a couple of the more dangerous chemicals.
When you bring memory foam into your home, it has a terrible smell, which is the off gassing of these and other toxic chemicals. These fumes attack your respiratory system, primarily.
Headache is the most common side effect, although I've heard of much worse individual accounts.
These toxic fumes will affect every living being in your home.

Latex has zero negative side effects.
If you stick your nose in it, it smells a little like rubber and cake, as it is finish with a little vanilla.
The initial odor is mild, if it has one. Most of the time there is no odor.
You've heard of people having an allergy to latex.
This is a topical allergy, (meaning you have to be touching it to react to it), which is experienced with latex gloves and bandages.
When processed into a foam, the allergen, (the protein), is removed and is now hypoallergenic.
Not only that, it comes covered and never comes directly in contact with the skin.

The mattress industry uses so much of this lousy memory foam material because it has created a boon for the them.
It wears out quickly and needs to be replaced frequently.
But, because it will return close enough to its original shape when you get off of it, it is highly unlikely that you will prevail in a warranty claim. It's positively diabolical.

"Solo Il Meglio", my grandfather used to tell me, in Italian...meaning, "Only the best".
He was always a proponent of high quality products because they lasted so long and were less expensive to use in the long run. Latex is such a product.
Memory foam is complete and utter junk.

VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase longevity.
Use our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
Thanks, Pete
