What Happened to the Quality of Sealy, Stearns and Foster Mattresses?

What Happened to the Quality of Sealy, Stearns and Foster Mattresses?

I get this question from many consumers, who have purchased these brands in the past.
And having had a good experience with them, all those years ago, purchased them again when it was time to replace them....only to be completely dissatisfied with their performance, within only a year or two of purchase.

In 2013, Tempurpedic bought both brands. THAT's what happened.
Sealy had been a reasonably priced, good quality mattress.
Stearns and Foster had been considered, "The Cadillac of the Industry", for many decades.
After Tempurpedic bought them and loaded every mattress with memory foam, they became nothing more than,
"Expensive Junk", over night.

Memory foam is promoted to be so good, as though it were, "The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread".
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Millions of dollars have been spent to sell this garbage product.
Instead of investing in quality, they spent that money trying to convince the American consumer to buy it.
TV, Radio, Print Ads and in store Sales Pitches would have you believe that memory foam was terrific.

"Horrific" is more the truth about memory foam.
Serta and Simmons were also sold...both to the same investment group.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
Contrary to all the sales hype, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
Not only is the quality of this upholstery material the lowest available, it also creates a health hazard.
Adding insult to injury, it off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
There are 61 different chemicals used to make memory foam, with Formaldehyde and Benzene only two of the several toxic chemicals involved.
The off gassing of these toxic chemicals, attack the respiratory system of every living being in your home.
Sinus headache is the most common negative side effect. But, much worse has been reported.
You can feel the effects by simply walking into any mattress store, as most of today's mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.
The specific purpose of memory foam is to sell more mattresses, more frequently to the same people.

I remember when memory foam first appeared....being sold on TV only, at the time.
Remember the hand being pressed into the foam...and when the hand was taken away, the hand print remained?
I thought to myself, "Who, in their right mind, would think that's a good idea?!".
Well, you have all witnessed, first hand, the power of mass marketing...equal to, "Brain Washing".

Their plan was long term.
Older folks who had been use to buying quality mattresses that lasted a decade or two, became quickly disillusioned.
But the true target was the younger consumers, who would not have that frame of reference.
The older consumers would, in time, die away. The younger ones, simply, wouldn't know any better.

We had been a Sealy/Stearns and Foster retailer for years....and happy to be so, offering quality products.
We dropped both lines after they were sold to Tempurpedic.
We had to go shopping at the industry trade shows, for high quality alternatives...without memory foam.
It wasn't easy, as most older manufacturers and most new ones had embraced the high profit of memory foam
over making a quality mattress.

We did, however, find what we were looking for.
The Wolf Corp., a 146 year old mattress manufacturer, quietly tucked away with one facility in Fort Wayne, IN.,
The oldest mattress manufacturer in the country that has been continually owned and operated by the same family.
Wolf makes a number of mattresses that are good quality at a reasonable price...without using memory foam.
Their mattresses are what we offer to replace the Sealy mattresses of old.

We also found, made in Canada, The Natura Brand....with a variety of high quality products.
They offer a line of Latex and Latex hybrid mattresses, including their Greenspring line, which exceeds the quality of the older Stearns and Foster mattresses.
(Latex is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for the last 100 years)
