Mattress Care and Maintenance Procedure for One and Two Sided Mattresses

Lisa writes:

Hi Pete,
Thank you for all your help in choosing mattresses.
We bought a one sided Natura of Canada Greenspring in king size and a two sided Wolf Brolynn in queen.

Honestly, they are couple of the best quality mattresses we've purchased in many years.

We want to keep them in like new condition as long as possible.
What is the best way to care for these mattresses, to maintain their current feel?
Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I'm so pleased to hear that you are enjoying your new mattresses.
There are a couple of tricks you can employ to keep them like new.

First, get a waterproof mattress protector for each of them.
Preventing moisture from seeping into the upholstery materials is a key to keeping them like new.
That moisture comes from perspiration, more so than any other reason.
We carry an Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector that does not sleep hot...as some do.
Shown here:

Every mattress should have one to keep the upholstery materials clean and dry.

Second, is proper rotation...a lost art, it seems.
Your two sided queen mattress should be flipped once a month for the first year and once every 3 months, thereafter.
The best way to do this, for the sake of making the most use of the entire sleeping surface is:
Alternate how you flip that mattress....side to side one time, then head to foot the next.
A good trick for one person doing this, is to pull the mattress off the bed...allowing the other end to hit the floor.
Then, simply flip the mattress back over onto the mattress and pull it from the other end.
This way, gravity and leverage do most of the work.

Your one sided mattress doesn't require a 2nd person to help you, but it is recommended.
One person doing this could result in a pulled muscle or two. The older you are, the more you'll want help.
In a king size, it is recommended that you rotate the mattress 1/4 turn.
A king isn't exactly square, but close enough to allow for a 1/4 turn.
The reason for the 1/4 turn is the way a king mattress tends to wear.
The center of the mattress tends to remain like new, since nobody sleeps there.
The 1/4 turn ensures much more even wear, over the years.

This trick only works on a standard king size mattress.
The time frame for doing this, is the same as above...once a month for the first year, once every 3 months thereafter.

Thanks, Pete
