Hi Pete,
You are providing an invaluable service to us consumers, and I thank you for that.
I've read many of your blog posts and the information on your website.
You seem to have two favorite recommendations.
Sometimes, it's a Simmons Beautyrest mattress with a Talalay Latex topper.
Sometimes, it's a Natura of Canada Greenspring mattress, usually the Ultra plush.
What I can't figure out, is why you recommend what you recommend to each of your customers.
How do I figure out which is the better choice for me?
As you can tell, I find this a bit confusing.
Thanks, Barry
Hi Barry,
The mattress industry goes to an awful lot of trouble to make the buying process as confusing as possible.
There are, literally, thousands of different mattresses on the market. Most are worthless, upholstered with toxic memory foam.
But before I go off on a long rant about all that, let me answer your question?
There are a number of factors I take into consideration, when making a recommendation.
Which bedroom is first. How much mattress depends on where you're using it.
A guest bedroom, being used occasionally, or a child's bedroom, where the user is small, would usually require spending less than for a master bedroom.
Based on the way you asked your question, I'm guessing this would be for a master bedroom.
The key factors are about the people who will be using the mattress.
Male and/or female, age, sizes (heights and weights), and any physical ailments that need to be addressed.
Males and females are, typically, built differently...each with a different shape and different pressure points.
When the mattress is for a husband and a wife of widely different sizes, the challenge becomes greater.
The heavier the people, the stronger the mattress needs to be.
A light weight female with a heavy man needs to be firm enough to hold his size and soft enough at the surface to make her comfortable.
And, that softness needs to come for a product that won't flatten out under her heavy husband.
Latex is the key component for achieving that.
People with more severe back problems require firmer support than those who's spines are undamaged.
Light weight people in good physical condition get to enjoy the right support and get the comfort they want at a lower price.
Simmons has 3 grades of Beautyrest mattresses...each grade up has a stronger support system.
Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses use a stronger coil system than Simmons best and is upholstered with natural Talalay Latex.
Both brands use a pre-compressed individually pocketed coil system, which contours to the shape of the body and maintains the spine's natural alignment.
The Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are upholstered with non-toxic memory foam. Memory foam produces a mushier feel than latex.
Memory foam is also temperature sensitive, which tends to wear a lot more quickly, which is why you need a latex topper to go on it.
Otherwise, the mattress will wear out and need replacing within a couple/few years. The latex topper prevents this.
Latex is far more resilient than any other type of upholstery...absorbing your body weight, which causes the mattress to remain like new for many years.
Which mattress I recommend becomes a balancing act...taking everything into consideration.
Let's take a large man with no real physical problems and a much smaller wife who suffers with arthritis or fibromyalgia.
The softer coils of the Simmons Beautyrest with the memory foam upholstery, along with a soft latex topper won't last him as long as the Natura of Canada Greenspring, but will make the wife more comfortable and relieve her pain.
In a case like this, the durability of the mattress is less important than the need of the wife for pain relief.
Then, there is the prefered comfort level of the people...some liking a firmer mattress than others.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses are, without question, a superior quality product...and will last longer, even under heavier people.
It's also an excellent choice for smaller people who like a firmer feel.
Do to the very high quality of the components in these mattresses, they are all firmer than they sound.
Even the ULtra Plush model, the softest of the four, cannot be considered too soft by anyone's standards.
As you can see, a lot of thought goes into the recommendations I make to people.
And for the average consumer, who doesn't have my 45 years of experience, all this can be very confusing.
My advice is that you fill me in on all of your particulars and leave the rest to me. I don't steer anyone wrong.
Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete,
I had no idea that so much went into this. Thank you for such a detailed response.
Salespeople at stores don't ask many questions. They make it sound easy, telling me to just pick out something comfortable.
I've been stung by them more than once. So, I think I'll take your advice.
My wife and I are in our late 40s. We are pretty average, both in height and weight.
We are, both, in reasonably good condition, with no acute physical ailments.
Despite the lack of specific problems or special needs, we have failed at this a couple of times in the past few years.
We do like a nice soft feeling mattress.
I look forward to your recommendation.
Thanks, Barry
