Hi Pete,
I currently sleep on a 2004 Sealy Posturepedic Coronation Series Sicily Model. It is an extra plush euro pillowtop.
I have Parkinson's disease and have great trouble getting in and out of bed and repositioning during sleep.
I also wake up with shoulder, neck and lower back pain often. I sink down in this mattress and feel stuck in it.
I have read a lot of the info on your website and am wondering if you have any input on another mattress which would be better for me.
I expect I need something much firmer and foam/gel free.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Tom
Hi Tom,
The problem with most of today's mattresses, is the memory foam upholstery.
Memory foam is temperature sensitive. Softening as it warms from your body heat, it then allows you to sink into it.
It's very difficult move in, at that point. Memory foam isn't very resilient, so it doesn't take long before you're hitting the harder foams that support it....causing pressure point pain.
Once sunken in, your body is no longer properly aligned, often causing back pain.
The key to a successful purchase, is in buying a mattress with no memory foam in it.
That 2004 Sealy Posturepedic doesn't have any memory foam....which is why it ;lasted for so long.
Tempurpedic now owns Sealy and everything they make is loaded with memory foam.
Sealy Posturepedic went from making good quality mattresses at an affordable price, to being now nothing more than expensive junk.
All of the name brands have been sold and all of them are using memory foam as their primary upholstery material.
When all this happened, we had to go shopping, at the trade shows, to find higher quality alternatives.
Over the years, we've home tested many different mattresses.
The one we have now, we've had for more than 3 years, and it is still in like new condition.
My wife and I are older, (me, more so than her), and with lots of age related aches and pains.
This mattress allows us to sleep pain free.
The mattress is one of the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses. We chose the Ultra Plush, which is the most comfortable of their 4 models.
