Hi Pete,
I am so glad I found this site.  I am incredibly overwhelmed and need a recommendation.

First, let me tell you about me.  I am a 5'4", 140 female with a herniated disc, L5 - S 1 to be exact.  
I am a very active sleeper, I toss and turn at night, sleep on both side and back.  I tend to be cold often.

An expensive mattress gets to be expensive because of all the extra padding that's put into it.
Your herniated discs require just the opposite of that...a more basic, firmer mattress.
Also, all that extra padding is just more memory foam, which doesn't hold up very well. 
And while they may feel good to try in the store, once they start to compress, it's your backs that will suffer for it.
