Extra Firm Simmons Beautyrest Mattress for a 300 Lb. Man?

Jay writes:

Hi Pete,
We've been mattress shopping and where they recommended a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress.
It was an extra firm and felt pretty good. We like a firm mattress.
Since I weigh 300 lbs and my wife weighs 220 lbs, I wanted to check with you before purchasing this mattress.
We need a queen size, for about a year.
Once our new house is built, we will be shopping for a king size.
The one we have is shot and causing pain, so it won't last another year.
What do you think about the Simmons Beautyrest for us?
What else might you recommend?
Thanks Jay

Hi Jay,
The name brands that we’ve known and trusted over the years, have been sold to investment groups.
None of them hold up well, even under average body weight...thanks to all the memory foam used in them.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing...all for the sake of profit.
Quality for the major brands has dropped dramatically over the last 15 years, but more so over the last 10 years.

In choosing a a mattress for you, a queen to be used for the next year, I’d like to see you in a pocketed coil unit, like the Simmons Beautyrest, for the sake of reducing motion transferring from one side to the other.
But, the raw steel used to make the Beautyrest coils isn’t strong enough to keep their shape under your weights.

Here is a link to the mattress I have in mind for you...The Wolf Brand Tulah Luxury Firm.

It’s more an old fashioned mattress...two sided and upholstered with high density polyurethane...with NO Memory Foam.

If you already have a queen size boxspring, I suggest adding a sheet of plywood to the top of that and using it...if it’s still in decent condition.
If not, here’s a link to an all wood foundation that is nice and strong:

The prices will keep you under budget, in part because they ship FedEx and UPS.
The foundation assembles easily and requires no tools.
The mattress only needs to be unpacked, and it’s ready to go.

When the time comes for your king, you can put that queen in your guest room.
For the king size mattress,  I recommend the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattress in Firm...the firmest of their 5 models.
These, too, use an individually pocketed coil unit...with more coils than in the Beautyrest.
The coils are double tempered and the upholstery is latex...the most durable upholstery material on the planet.
To view this, click on this link, then scroll down to the “Liberty Firm” model.

Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.

Thanks, Pete
