Hi Pete,
I'm a 52 year old female with no weight problems only lower back and hip pain.
I currently have a Sealy Posturepedic Expedition Plush 2 sided mattress.
It is still in pretty good condition b/c I take care of things.
However, I wake up each day sore and stiff but my doc suggested I try a firmer mattress along with swimming to help.
I have some sciatica nerve pain, which is a symptom of the lower back (L5-S1) pain.
I'm willing to try a new mattress to get some additional relief and better sleep.
Please offer help.
I know good sleep helps with the body's ability the heal and better overall health.
Also, what's the purpose of buying a new boxspring?
You are not sleeping on the box spring and how important is it when purchasing a new mattress? What should a buyer look for?
Thanks, Faye
Hi Faye,
The last two sided mattress that Sealy made was in 2003.
So, your mattress is, at least, 15 years old.
You will void the warranty of any new mattress that you put on a 15 yr or older boxspring.
Boxsprings develop wear spots under the heaviest parts of your body.
A new mattress will conform to them.
Also, the coil system in your mattress contains interlocked coils...which don't help sciatica.
Sciatica is caused by vertebrae pinching a nerve in the small of your back, where the discs have worn. Maintaining the natural alignment of your spine will help to keep the nerve from being pinched. This is best done with an individually pocketed coil system, where each coil moves independently from the next.
Simmons Beautyrest was the first of this type, but they, along with all of the name brands have gone bad by using memory foam for the upholstery. Coupled with the coils being untempered, they don't last very long...often needing replacing within a few years...at most.
The best of this type is the Natura of Canada Greenspring...using double tempered coils and upholstered with natural Talalay Latex.
The support contouring support is firm, but you will need softness at the surface to sleep deeply.
There are 5 models that are all firmer than they sound.
If you are a back or stomach sleeper, go with the Ultra Plush.
If you are a side sleeper, go with the Plush Eurotop.

Not only will these mattresses relieve your pain, they will continue to do so for many years.
I have plenty of disc related back problems, from which I no longer suffer any pain by using one of these mattresses at home.
I suggest using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will greatly extend the life and loft of the upholstery materials inside. Ours sleep cool and make NO Noise.
