Hi Pete,
I have been reading and enjoying your blog.
I made the mistake of purchasing a Simmons Beautyrest in plush. The mattress that came, felt much softer and I sunk in much more than the store model.
I purchased this prior to reading anything on your site.
I will be returning it on the comfort warranty and I only have a one time replacement free of charge.
I do not want to make the same mistake. They have the same mattress in what is called a tight top in luxury firm.
So the question is would you recommend going with the tight top and add a latex topper?
Based on what I have read in your blog I am considering changing for the luxury firm tight top and then if I find I need more cushioning, ordering a Talalay latex topper from you.
Not sure if a 2 or 3 inch would be required for the king bed.
Also not knowing anything about the toppers how they secure to the bed? Do they move around? That is a concern of my wife's...maintenance? How are they for heat?
Thanks in advance, Mitch
Hi Mitch,
I believe you already know the answer to your question. I believe, too, that all you need is a little clarification as to why.
Latex is thee most resilient and comfortable upholstery material on the planet. It doesn't lose it's shape, even over long periods of time, unlike the materials used to cushion mattresses.
For the sake of getting your money's worth out of any of today's mattresses, it's important to add the latex to the surface of a firmer mattress.
This will extend the comfort life and value...without sacrificing support.
The latex toppers do not move around. Both, EverEden and PureBliss are completely finish.
EverEden is reversible and has corner straps that hook to the corners of your mattress.
PureBliss uses a non-skid fabric on the bottom.
Latex sleeps cool.
All you'll need is 2" of soft Talalay Latex...from either brand...shown here:
Normally, a newly delivered mattress will be firmer than the floor sample...not softer.
When you deal with a store that offers a comfort exchange, you could easily end up with something someone else had in their home and returned...despite the illegality of it.
Factories don't participate in these comfort exchanges. So, a retailer can't send a returned mattress back to the factory for credit.
A more reputable retailer will sell them as floor sample close-outs. Less reputable retailers will simply put them back in stock and sell them as new to the next person who comes along.
I want you to be sure that you are not getting someone else's returned mattress.
1) Make sure that the delivery guys do not unpack the mattress on the truck. Have them do it inside your home, so that you can see if the plastic bag has been taped closed.
At the factory, a mattress is covered with a sheet of plastic...top and bottom...and the edges are heat sealed on all four sides.
A mattress bag that has been taped closed along one edge has been out of the bag prior to getting to you.
2) Also, there is a white "law" label at the head of the mattress, which contains a lot of information. One piece of information is the "Date of Manufacture".
You might check the mattress you have for that info and compare that date to the date your delivery.
If there is more than a month's time lapsed, that would explain yours being softer than the floor sample.
Many people like the idea of a comfort exchange, but stop to think about the other edge of that sword.
