A Good Alternative Mattresses to a Sleep Number Bed.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I are looking for a new bed and so confused with all the choices. 
We were considering a Sleep Number bed and the biggest selling points are all the wrong reasons, but the logic was that we'd buy their lower end bed and get a nice mattress topper. 
The way it arrives in boxes is a plus since we have cramped living quarters for navigating a mattress and we're both DIY types and felt like having a bed we could "fix" could be a plus.
But that sure seems like a lot of money for those qualities and something has me just not sold on that bed (even though I was the one to originally bring it up as an option). 
We just really want a bed that will last for a while and is comfortable and somewhat reasonably priced. I am a side sleeper 100%.
In fact, I don't move in my sleep so hip and shoulder comfort matters to me. My partner flops around more from back to stomach and side, but mostly side/stomach position. 
At the Sleep Number store, we found that we both like pretty much the same number though I do recall liking a number lower than we both expected.
But, I don't really buy into the logic that it tells us anything at all.
Someone directed me to this site and thought I'd see if I could find some advice.

Reviews from consumers who have purchased a Sleep Number bed are well mixed. 
Besides that, the support you get from an air mattress in improper spinal support...relying on displacement and not support that pushes up against you.
The human body requires firm contouring support for proper spinal alignment.

Unfortunately for you, the consumer, today's mattresses are mainly designed to sell...and need frequent replacing.
They feel good when new, but the cheap upholstery materials fail quickly...within months, not years.
This is all designed to get you back into the market a whole lot sooner than you would like.

The highest quality upholstery material is latex...has been since it was introduced in the 1920s. There's never been anything to match its comfort or durability.
If you can afford an all latex mattress, you'll certainly get your money's worth. 
If you're willing to spend thousands of dollars on gimmicky mattresses, like air and memory foam, you can spend the same money for a latex mattress.
And, have it provide unequaled support and comfort that lasts for decades.

However, I do carry a mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil unit, which does two things...gives with you at the hip and shoulder, and provides push back support for your spine.
This mattress is upholstered with all natural latex....which resists body impressions and provides many years of comfort.
