Our Plush Simmons Beautyrest Mattress is Too Soft.

Jamie writes:

Hi Pete,
Our plush Simmons Beautyrest mattress seems to be too soft. Both my husband and I wake up with horrible lower back pain.
We bought this mattress a little less than 2 yrs ago, when I was pregnant, and it seemed great then.
It was helpful for my arms falling asleep and numb spots on my hips during pregnancy, but now it feels so soft, and it seems to have lost its support.
We bought it from a wholesale dealer, so we can't exchange or return it.
Before we give up and buy a new mattress, is there anything we can do to firm our bed up?
Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie,
You can only firm up the surface feel....not the depth of softness from the mattress....or restore the support that it has lost.
A 2" Dunlop latex or a 2" Talalay latex topper in Medium firmness will help. But, it is only a band-aid.
The Dunlop is more dense than the Talalay and a little firmer as a result, so if getting a latex topper, I suggest the Dunlop.
It's your best hope for delaying the purchase of a new mattress.

Soften the surface of a too firm mattress. Insulate yourself from the memory foam in your mattress to Sleep Cool. Extend the comfort life of your mattress.

Allow me to elaborate about what got you here...for your sake and the sake of others who may be researching.
Plush Simmons Beautryests use a much thinner wire for the coils, than is used in their firmer models.
This is why we don't show or sell any of their plush mattresses.
Also, Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are loaded with memory foam.

Furthermore, the industry is geared to selling mattresses based on comfort...support and durability be damned.
You have to be very careful about that when buying. Your physical experience when shopping makes it easy to go with what's comfortable, giving no thought to anything else.
That alone, is what got you where you are with the mattress you chose. It happens all the time.
Memory foam and pillowtops are the two major products that provide wonderful initial comfort...the kind of comfort that makes the sale.
It is the kind of comfort that is lost within months to a year...maybe two.

Latex is and has been the best...most comfortable, most supportive and most durable of any type of upholstery used in mattresses...true since the 1920s.
Not hyped, like memory foam, latex is expensive because it is expensively made and not because millions of dollars where spent to promote it.
Memory foam is cheaply made junk that is expensive to buy.
If you are planning on spending a lot of money on a mattress, get your money's worth with an all latex mattress or a coil/latex hybrid.
