A Mattress for a B&B.

Jeff writes:

Hi Pete,
My wife and I are opening a B&B. In fact, a few of them.
When we travel, w have enjoyed sleeping on a Simmons Beautyrest and thought to get those for our guests.
But, after reading some terrible reviews and then finding and reading your blog, I'm a bit concerned about the durability of the Simmons.
I've seen your recommendation for a Simmons Beautyrest Sandy Springs in luxury Firm and a 2" soft latex topper to go on it.
I was wondering if you thought this would work for our B&B.
After reading your blog posts, I'm also interested in latex pillows. Which one would you suggest?
And, I think I want the Danican waterproof mattress and pillow protectors for my beds.
Please send me the information you think I'll need.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
First, I'd like to point out that most hotels that feature Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, don't use the higher end models...like the Sandy Springs from the Platinum Series.
This link will take you to the lesser expensive Great Lakes Cove in Luxury Firm.

The primary difference is the higher coil density, 1000 in a queen size Sandy Springs, compared to 850 in the Great Lakes Cove.
Also, the Great Lakes Cove mattress will have less memory foam, and that's a good thing.
The feel that the individually pocketed coils produces, is the same in both.

For your guests, I suggest the Great Lakes Cove.
For your master bedroom, go the extra for the Sandy Springs...in Luxury Firm.

You'll be topping all of your mattresses with a latex topper, which will do a number of things:
Create luxurious  Surface Comfort that you, your wife and your guests will love.
Insulate you from the memory foam in the mattress. Memory foam wears poorly and sleeps hot. The latex topper prevents that premature wear and sleeps cool.
Greatly extend the life of the mattress, far beyond what Simmons intended.
When my wife and I road trip, we look for hotels and motels that feature Simmons Beautyrest.
The individually pocketed coils, all moving independently from one another, provide contour support that maintains the natural alignment of your spine.
A side benefit of this coil unit is to greatly reduce motion transfer. When one person moves, it doesn't wake the other person.

And while Simmons, like all of the other major brands, are specifically designed to need frequent replacing, starting with the luxury firm model and adding a latex topper will give you many more years then you'd normally get from the mattress only...and far greater longevity than you'd get from a "Plush" Beautyrest where the coils are much thinner gauge.

The latex topper to get, is the Ever Eden 2" Soft Vytex Dunlop.

Ever Eden Vytex Dunlop Latex Topper

Soften the surface of a too firm mattress. Insulate yourself from the memory foam in your mattress to Sleep Cool. Extend the comfort life of your mattress.

There are two reasons for this recommendation over the Talalay.
The Talalay is just a hair softer. So, you are losing very little in the way of surface comfort.
Latex, due to the process that changes it from the sap of the rubber tree into a foam, makes it hypo-allergenic...which is not to say that it's completely allergen free.
(The allergen being the protein that is naturally present in the tree sap).
The Vytex Dunlop process takes that a step further and removes the remaining protein...making it virtually allergen free.
It's rare that someone will react to latex foam, but with so many different people, why take the chance.
Also, the Vytex Dunlop is a bit longer lasting than the Talalay.
For your wife's sake, I'd get the soft Talalay for your master bedroom. I think your wife would enjoy the small difference.

Unlike memory foam, latex is NOT temperature sensitive. The feel it creates is one of suspension. In other words, it cushions you, but does not allow you to sink through it.
It holds you up, while being soft. It's rather unique.
Latex foam rubber is and has been thee absolute best upholstery material for the last 100 years.
It's expensively made and causes the product, with which it's upholstered to last a very long time....which it why it isn't use by the major brands.

Without question and without equal, thee most comfortable pillow is the Soft Talalay model from Pure Talalay Bliss.

Pure Talalay Bliss Latex Pillow

100% latex pillows with that nice soft feel. Natural Talalay Latex Rubber provides uplifting support to your neck and bottomless pressure relief for your head.

We know it's the most comfortable because we have home tested many, and this is the bomb...so to speak.
Not only does it provide extraordinary comfort, it lasts for years.
One caveat. The factory, just this month, has discontinued the King size. You'll need 3 queen pillows for a king size bed.

Finally, we come to the best way to protect your beds and pillows.
There is no question that you should use a Danican waterproof mattress and pillow protector.
The ones we carry are the best we've tested.

They work without fail...regardless of whatever accidents may occur. Many other brands lose their waterproof property with repeated laundering. These do not.
They provide a generous cut...easy to put on and take off. The hold tightly as to not pop off.
They don't shrink...not even after many, many washings in hot water. (NOTE: Do Not Dry on High Heat).
They are cool to sleep on. They are made of all natural cotton infused with Silver. It's the Silver that keeps it cool.
Again, we know this to be true from having home tested it, along with other brands...most, of which, use a terry cloth top that sleeps hot.
The  most important reason for using this, is not for the occasional accidents. It's to prevent perspiration from seeping into the mattress and breaking down the upholstery layers, which translates into premature wear.
