Mold, Mildew or Bed Bugs in our Memory Foam Mattress.

Erik writes:

Hello Pete,
My wife and I recently lifted our memory foam mattress to find what we initially thought was mold on the mattress and box spring, but it only appears to be in the middle.
After some research, I'm not sure if this is in fact mold, or if it might be mildew or bed bugs. What does it look like to you and what should we do?
Note: the plastic cover in the picture was put on after we lifted the mattress, just before these pictures were taken.
Thank you, Erik

Hi Erik,
This sort of problem has only been seen with memory foam mattress.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material. It reacts to your body heat...absorbing it and reflecting it back to you.
This causes you to perspire to a much greater degree than any other upholstery material that is not temperature sensitive.
The result of the extra perspiration is that it seeps through to the bottom of the mattress, where black mold forms.

Memory foam is comprised of 61 different chemicals...some of which are toxic....and, it off gasses those toxic chemicals.
Between that and the mold that forms on the underside of the mattress, it a real health hazard.
Keep it encased in plastic or get rid of it and never buy another mattress with memory foam in it.

Beg bugs are easily visible. You can see them moving. So, it isn't that.
Bed bugs are easily killed with high heat...a hair dryer on high will kill them.

Mix ammonia and water, 50/50, in a spray bottle and give the mold on the underside of your mattress a spritzing.
It won't take much to kill the mold.
