The bonnell coil is something we recommend for many people with disc problems...especially when the disc problems are more severe, and/or when the person with those disc problems is carrying more body weight.
However, the pocketed coil works best for many.
A word of caution concerning the pocketed coil units. Simmons is the premier manufacturer of the individually pocketed coil system.
Their plush models use a very thin gauge wire for the coils and those do not provide adequate support for most people...disc problems or not.
At 225 Lbs, and having herniated, bulging and degenerative disc disease...the trifecta of disc related back problems, I can tell you from experience that a firm pocketed coil unit upholstered with natural latex and no memory foam, works just fine.

Keep in mind that if there are two of you in the bed, the pocketed coil greatly reduces motion transfer.
With a bonnell coil, the movement of one person is easily felt by the other.
