What kind of mattress and adjustable base do we need for DDD and Sleep Apnea.

Rita writes:

Hi Pete,
My husband and I are in need of a new mattress and possibly an adjustable base.
The reason I think we might need to consider an adjustable base is that recently I was diagnosed with DDD and find that if I sleep in my recliner for a good portion of the night.
I do not wake up with terrific low back pain and stiffness.

Some back ground:
I am 70 and weigh 175 pounds, suffer from DDD, reflux, sinus problems, and asthma.
My husband is 70, weighs 220 and suffers from sleep apnea and snoring but not bad enough to qualify for a cpap machine.
He is retired military and sometimes talks in his sleep and has bad dreams.

Cost is a factor and we could get the mattresses (two twin XL for a king size platform like frame) and then get the adjustable base at a later date if we feel we need it.
So we wish to purchase a mattress(s) that could be used with an adjustable base or maybe foam wedges that you sometimes mention in your blog.
What would you recommend for mattresses for us and if we do need an adjustable base?
If you need more information, please let us know.
Thank you in advance for your time,
Rita

Hi Rita,
Your situation requires a low cost solution.
Dad was an engineer, working for RCA for much of his life.
I mention this, because he and his coworkers could squeeze the buffalo off a nickel...specializing  in low cost solutions to problems without sacrificing quality.
One such problem, was the same as yours.
When mom came down with acid reflux and needed to sleep on an incline in order to breathe better, he built blocks that went under the back wheels of the bed fame.
He unattached the headboard from the frame and screwed it to the wall...problem solved.
The same thing will work for you.

I believe that the use of the recliner, to sleep, was more about breathing better than back support. Ask your doctor if I'm correct about this, but your back will do better if the natural alignment of the spine is maintained...and not bent, as it would be in an adjustable bed base.

The best type of mattress, for maintaining the spine's natural alignment, is one using an individually pocket coil...where each coil moves independently from the others.
The most popular of these is the Simmons Beautyrest. However, they aren't very strong, using non-tempered steel for the coils and upholstering them with memory foam.
The only Beautyrests made that will hold a large man is their Black models, which are their most expensive. And, because the upholstery is memory foam, they need a latex topper to keep them from losing their shape. And those aren't cheap.

The better choice is the mattress we use at home...the Natura Greenspring.
These mattresses use the same pocketed coils as Simmons. But, the steel for the coils is twice
tempered and so, much stronger...and, the upholstery is natural talalay latex, so you don't need to buy a separate latex topper.
I would suggest the Plush EuroTop or Ultra Plush models for both, proper spinal support and comfort.
Here is the link to those mattresses.
