Hi Pete,
We have a Simmons Beautyrest "dresden" mattress manufactured July 2002. It has been the most comfortable, yet firm mattress that we have ever used.
I believe it is made of urethane/innerspring construction. It is not reversible; however, we have rotated it from top to bottom all during our many years of use.
After all these years, I'm sure it has been discontinued. It needs to be replaced due to sagging from our body weight.
Do you know which mattress on the market now would be most comparable to this one.
Please note that I have to use heating pads/ice packs on a regular basis for muscle problems.
There are so many different kinds of material used now in mattresses and it is so confusing to figure which kind of mattress will give us the many years of use plus the comfort we have enjoyed with the "Dresden".

Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

Hi Shirley,
Much has changed since you bought that mattress.
If you look at the law label, you'll see that the vast majority of upholstery material is polyurethane. And, you'll find no memory foam used.
The big change over these years is the addition of memory foam.
A Beautyrest, today, will last between 1 and 5 years...depending on the degree of softness and the amount of body weight placed upon it.
THIS, all due to the memory foam.
Of the three types of foams used, memory foam is the worst. In fact, it's horrible.
It's been a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer.
At the time you bought yours, mattresses were changing from being made two sided to one sided. Still, it was difficult to buy a bad bed. Today, with so much memory foam used, it's hard to buy a good one...especially from among the name brands.
They have all betrayed the consumer's trust...trust they had spent decades building...for the sake of the ever prevalent "corporate greed" that has gripped many of our industries.
Not only is memory foam a poor quality, short lived product, it's also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which it's made. It is, "the thing to avoid".
In the face of this pestilence, all natural latex foam has been reemerging in popularity .
Chemical free latex has been, and continues to be thee very best upholstery material available anywhere on the planet for the last 100 years.
The petrochemical based polyurethane foam in your mattress, has been used for the past 50 years and has been safe, durable and comfortable...and, reasonably priced.
Latex cost more to harvest and process...but lasts longer than anything else.
The one thing, more than anything else, that makes a Beautyrest so comfortable, is the individually pocketed coils, which move independently from one another, maintaining the natural alignment of your spine.
We have for you, from a Canadian company "Natura", a pocketed coil mattress like the Beautyrest, but upholstered with natural latex.
The mattress I'm recommending to you is the mattress we sleep on at home.
It's the Natura Greenspring Liberty in Ultra Plush.
