All latex for a comfortable mattress that will stay comfortable over the years.

Hi Pete,
I'm in the market for a new mattress and don't know what type to purchase.

I don't have an actual budget, but would like to buy a comfortable mattress that suits me.
I'm a side sleeper, typically, but occasionally find myself waking up on my back.

Recently, my back has been hurting with my pillow top bed. I also know that I don't like firm/hard mattresses.
Any recommendation/suggestions you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Anna

Hi Anna,
It's a great big mattress world out there, with many thousands from which to choose.
The industry has exploded with new brands and many more than the usual selection from the brands you know. If you take the time to contemplate all of this, you have to wonder why.
It seems like everybody and their grandmother is getting in on the act. And, when you go shopping, many of the salespeople are pushing memory foam.
There is only one reason why people do the things they do, anymore....money. It's all about making money.
The really smart people have figured out that there are two things, more than anything else, that makes the sale....pillowtops and memory foam.
These products are extremely seductive, interns of initial comfort. You try them at the store and say...oooh, I'll take it. Not only are they easy to sell, but there's lots of profit.
The down side is that these products that feel so good when new, feel nothing like that in a matter of months. You'll hang on to it and suffer with it because of the money you spent for it.
But, after a couple/few years, when your back or hip or shoulder just can't stand the pain any longer, you go shopping for a new mattress.
Instead of getting the 10 to 20 years you used to get, you become a frequent mattress buyer.
And, unless you know that the problem is the pillowtop and/or memory foam, you'll repeat the mistake because you simply can't deny your sense of comfort.
"They feel so good in the showroom", is something I've heard countless times...which is how that same mistake is made over and over again.
Of the many thousands of beds there are to choose from, a very few are worth buying.
The human body, while sleeping, requires firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface.
Unless you have a lot of disposable income, you're going to want your sleep system to also last a decent length of time, providing good value, as well.
Even people with a lot of disposable income aren't going to want to waste it, I wouldn't think.
Memory foam is so prevalent, it's hard to avoid. But avoid it, you must. Not only is it a lousy value, it's toxic....comprised of 60 some chemicals.
Reports of respiratory problems resulting from the off gassing of the chemicals are everywhere on the Internet to read.
When you shop, you will hear a different story told by those selling it. To listen to all the hype surrounding memory foam, you'd think it was the best thing since sliced bread.
Oddly enough, there is a product that is the best thing since sliced bread, that happens to be much older than sliced bread.
Latex is a natural rubber foam and has been the best material available since the 1920s. Best in comfort, support and durability.
Both, latex and memory foam tend to be expensive. Latex, because it's expensive to make. Memory foam, because of the huge profit margins.
If you can afford it, an all latex mattress is best.
