Hi Pete.
I am a 58 yo female with double curve scoliosis. i/we (me, 5’7 145 lbs; husband, 5’11, 190) were sleeping on a simmons world class luxury firm for 2 yrs, which was always too firm.
We had a feather bed AND a memory foam topper under the feather bed, but never really liked it.
Last month we purchased a sealy Optimum, soft, foam bed and a tempurpedic adjustable base (retailer made me a good deal on base).
My entire back hurt, especially my lower back. Returned it for a Simmons World Class, Plush Pillowtop (model is called Patience). Have had it for a week and we are most unhappy. It is very firm feeling.
The retailer, along with another retailer, swears it is not the base causing it to feel firmer. All I know is the Simmons World Class, Plush Pillowtop feels much, much firmer than the floor model.
I wake with my shoulders and hip hurting. I purchased a 3” memory foam topper of the weekend just to alleviate the firmness. It helps, but we don’t like the memory foam feel.
The retailer is sending someone this afternoon to check out the mattress. I don’t know how a “plush” can feel so hard?
Any thoughts, suggestions?
I’m certain if I push, he will let me exchange for something else, although I already lost $200 exchanging the Optimum.
As FYI, I am both a side sleeper and back sleeper. Thank you in advance for any help/insight you can provide.

Thanks, Pete

Hi Stephanie,
It's very easy to make mistakes when most of what's offered isn't worth buying.
There has been a steady decline on over-all quality in the mattress industry...especially among the name brands.
I mention that because, thus far, you've made quite few.
For 5'7", you are very light in weight. This, alone, can make what you're feeling be deceiving.
What your body requires is firm, contouring support and a soft sleeping surface. How well this is achieved depends on the quality of materials used.
A plush pillowtop Beautyrest comes with some of the worst reviews on the web. The "plush" models are made so, by using a much thinner gauge wire.
Neither they, nor the pillowtops, keep their shape for very long...resulting in poor performance and accounting for most of the complaints.
Being slender is a plus, in that a pressure sensitive item, like a mattress, doesn't wear as quickly. However, your husband's side of the bed doesn't have that advantage.
After 2 weeks, his side should be quite a bit softer. If you rotate the mattress, (something you will need to do frequently), you should notice the difference in feel.
The Simmons Beautyrest, which uses an individually pocketed coil unit, is designed to maintain the natural alignment of your spine.
Your spine will require some degree of firm support, otherwise your back will start to hurt.
Surface softness is best had by a layer of soft latex, which is extremely comfy and also extremely resilient...unlike memory foam, which is absolutely worthless.
My recommendation to you is to start with a luxury firm World Class mattress...without a pillowtop. (The Santorini model on our website).
This will provide the support your body needs.
For the surface softness you require, I'd go with the Ever-Eden 3" Soft Talalay Latex topper.
Together, they provide your body with all the support and comfort needed...and, it will last you a good long time.
Here are links to both items, for you to review. Delivery is free and there's no sales tax.
