Hello Mattress Expert!
My wife and I stayed in a Doubletree by Hilton for 5 nights where we slept on their Sweet Dreams bed by Serta, part of their Perfect Sleeper series, where we were both absolutely blown away with how amazing we slept.
Amazingly, according to the date on the mattress we slept on, it was 5yrs old, made in 2010. Big hotel, big city, not sure how much use it did or didn't get, but it was a dream to sleep on.
We are now mattress shopping.... overwhelming!.. and just starting out.
My wife weighs 290-300lbs and has Fibromyalgia, and a host of spinal problems (stenosis, disc problems, etc.) all low back, save for the Fibro.
She's a very heavy snorer, has sleep apnea and likes to flip onto her back, waking up in pain.
I weigh 180-190lbs and have upper back/shoulder injuries (arms go dead sleeping on my side) and some lower back problems.
My questions/concerns:
- What bed would be similar to the one we slept on?
- I have issues with memory foam, not only heat, but hearing that it breaks down fast, but does it really.. compared to the poly foams in many innerspring beds?
- My wife is allergic to latex, contact allergy. Encased in a bed/cover, is this not an issue?
I'm concerned with getting a bed that holds up for a reasonable time (7/8yrs - 10yrs?): sagging, breakdown, body impression that causes pain, but not be enough for warranty claim.
- Have heard scary things about "all foam" beds and longevity/holding up over time, do they with the right brands?
- Found a TempurPedic locally the wife liked. Afraid to spend so much if it falls apart.
We are looking at a Simmons King Palm Plush Recharge Mattress at the local guys, it seems quite comfortable. Hard to tell lying on a mattress in the store, they do have a comfort guarantee.
Thank you for taking the time on my questions, and thank you for your wonderful website and honest, not tainted answers. :)
Blessings!
Sincerely, Tony
Hi Tony,
To find a mattress similar to the one at the Double Tree Hotel, it would be best if you were contact a Serta dealer.
I would suggest American Mattress.
Ask For Ken Mazda. He will be the most knowledgeable.

Hello Peter,
Thank you for your speedy reply.
Yes, I have been thinking that. We live in Central Oregon, so we'll have to find someone here.
Any recommendations based on what I had on my previous email, the hotel bed aside?
I'm intrigued by latex foam, but also some trepidation for reasons stated. Plus, not sure we can afford it unless we find a good deal.
Thanks again. Have a wonderful week!! :)
Tony
Good Morning Tony,
To many people, latex foam rubber appears to be a new product.
Latex is an all natural product that was discovered in the 1880's.
It was first introduced as a mattress, in the 1920s.
It is and has been, thee very best upholstery material available anywhere on the planet, for the last 100 years, or so.
Today's mattresses are laden with memory foam, which is the worst upholstery material ever invented for this purpose.
Memory foam is specifically designed to be deceptive....producing initial comfort that is designed to "Make the sale".
Memory foam loses it's initial comfort and support in a very short time, so that you become a frequent mattress buyer.
The name brands have all gone to using memory foam, for the express purpose of selling more mattresses, more frequently to the same people.
Memory foam is the only foam that is temperature sensitive. It absorbs the heat your body gives off and softens as it warms. Once softened, your body sinks into it.
After only months of this nightly softening and sinking, it has lost the little resiliency it had, allowing you to sink through it...then hitting the firmer poly foam that supports it.
By this time, you're spine has lost its alignment and your pressure points, (Hip and shoulder), are sore from the harder foam under the memory foam.
Companies using memory foam have learned that they can extend their warranties, because they never, (or rarely), have to make good on a warranty claim.
Even though the consumer knows that the product is shot, the memory foam will return to its original shape when you get off of the mattress....eliminating the sustained impression needed for the consumer to prevail in a warranty claim.
It's positively diabolical.
Side effects of memory foam are:
1) It sleeps hot. After absorbing your body's heat, it reflects it back to you. Of latex, gel has been used with the memory foam to mitigate the heat factor. However, the gel only works for a couple/few hours...so to not provide relief from the heat that lasts through your entire sleep cycle.
2) Once the memory foam has soften and you have sunk into it, you can't change position without having to wait for the memory foam to respond. By time it does and you've settled into your new position, you're fully awake.
These side affects occur with any and all memory foam.
If your memory foam is not natural, plant based memory foam, and happens to be the much more common chemical based memory foam, it will off gas the toxic chemicals from which it's made....chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene...just to name 2 of the more dangerous of the 61 chemicals used.
Additional side effects for this type of memory foam include: Headache, (which is the most common). The fumes also attack your respiratory system, which is very bad for those suffering from any sort of breathing disorder. The worst That I've had reported to me, is bleeding sinuses.
Latex has none of these issues and is safe enough for a baby to ingest without getting sick from it...as the latex we carry is 100% all-natural.
Latex is thee most resilient upholstery material on the planet and an excellent choice for very large people.
The comfort it provides lasts for years. It relieves all the pressure points, relaxes your muscles and eases blood flow. These combine to produce the best night's sleep you can get, a deeper night's sleep with a lot less tossing and turning...and it lasts for many years.
Latex is expensively made....starting as the sap from the rubber tree. Many brands are over priced. However, we carry a brand that is reasonably priced, using a more simple design and shipping via UPS.
