Simmons Beautyrest Black Alexia & a 2" Soft Talalay Latex Mattress Topper.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I are currently looking to purchase a new mattress. We just rid ourselves of a TempurPedic Rhapsody which after only having a few years had broken in and was no longer supportive.
My husband is 5'11", 290 lbs, has disc pain, and he carries his weight around his stomach. I'm 5'6", 225 lbs, and find myself sensitive to mattresses in the hip area (certain mattresses seem to push against my hip, making the side not against the bed feel some pain).
Based on what we've been reading on your site, it sounds as though a firm mattress with a latex topper is a good option. We've tried out the Simmons Beautyrest Black in Extra Firm (the Oceanside version at Macy's) and felt like it might be a good option, but we also a few months ago had tried a latex foam and at least at that point had felt like it was a possible choice. My main concern with the foam though is having come from memory foam I don't know what kind of durability it has and whether it will do the same as the TempurPedic - breakdown and no longer be supportive.
I understand that mattresses aren't really made to last long, but we've been through probably 3 beds in the past 5 years and I'd like to try and get more life out of whatever we buy this go round.
Any tips, suggestions, or advice you can provide is greatly appreciated. I've already gotten a ton of information from your site, including information on latex foam that was an incredible help. Since we aren't made of money, budget is somewhat of a concern, especially with what I've seen for latex, but at the same time I'm willing to spend more if it means I don't have to go mattress shopping again anytime soon.
Thanks so much! Courtney
Hi Courtney, An all latex mattress is, generally, the absolute best mattress available. "Generally", being the operative word here. There have been instances where is was a wrong choice. The circumstances surrounding those instances were similar to yours...a large man with disc problems. Since the odds are against you for all latex, the track you're on is best. The Simmons Beautyrest Black series uses the strongest coils on today's market...for commercially made mattresses. Only our two side Medi-Coil is stronger. However, it would not be my choice for your hip. Stick with the Beautyrest Black. The pocketed coils will contour to you and give better at the hip.
As you can see from this above link, the Alexia is the same as the Oceanside.
This would be a good choice as base support for the two of you. Add to that, a 2" layer of soft Talalay latex and you'll have comfort that lasts, as well as good firm support. The latex topper provides the extraordinary comfort that you can only get from latex. As an added bonus, the high resiliency of latex absorbs much of your body weight. Subsequently, the mattress doesn't have to work so hard. This entire sleep system will last much longer than what you've been used to.

An Important Note:
Any kind of moisture, be it from spills, accidents or perspiration causes a mattress to wear prematurely.
Protect your investment with high quality, Waterproof Mattress and Pillow Protectors that sleep cool and won't shrink.

Thanks, Pete
