Latex Topper for a Sealy Springfree Garden Vine latex mattress.

Joan writes:

Hello,
We have a Sealy Springfree Garden Vine latex mattress that is about 6 years old, and the plush top has formed an indentation on my husband's side, probably from poly foam in the cushion top. What would you recommend as a latex topper:  he weighs 250 lbs. and is 6'4", I am 115 and 5'2"...both of us are side or back sleepers. And would you place a topper on top of the cushion top or flip the mattress over (no cushion on the bottom)?
Thank you, Joan

Hi Joan,
You're right about everything.
Flip your mattress over and add a 2" layer of soft Talalay Latex...shown here:

It'll be like having a brand new mattress...and one that will last longer without any poly foam to compress.

Thank you for your reply! We were thinking 3 inch soft latex topper because my husband is 250 lbs..., but you think 2 is sufficient? Would 3 be TOO much?

Hi Joan,
You would think that more of a good thing would be better.
What's we've found is that the 3" soft Talalay works best with petite people, who exert less pressure.
For large people, the greater depth of softness allows the heaviest parts of the body to sink in further, which in many cases, throws off the natural alignment of the spine.
So, for your husband, the 3" could easily create a problem, where we never have that problem with the 2".
The poly foam on top that compressed was 2" thick.

Hi Pete,
Thank you again for your helpful insight! Would you say a 3" Dunlop would still be too soft/unsuitable for my husband? You seem to prefer the Talalay over the Dunlop... Just getting all the advice I can before making a purchase...

Hi Joan,
I'm guessing that you're worried about how it will wear under your husband's 250 lbs.
The Dunlop latex is more durable, but much less comfortable.
Dunlop is a more dense material and is better for support, as opposed to surface comfort.
If you were to buy a new latex mattress, one with a Dunlop core and a talalay top will provides excellent support and comfort.
The underside of your mattress is really, quite firm.
A Dunlop topper will not provide the surface comfort you're looking for.
The same 2" soft talalay latex topper is what we use at home. We've been using the same topper for 6 years and it is still in like new condition.
When we first got it, my wife and I, both, weighed well in excess of 250 lbs.
We are now in the 225 lb. range. And neither of us is anywhere near 6'4" in height.
So you see, there's nothing to worry about when it comes to durability.
It's infinitely more resilient and much more comfortable than the poly foam that compressed on you.

Thanks, Pete
