Advice searching for a comfortable mattress.

I am hoping you can help me end a long, agonizing search for a comfortable mattress. 
We have bought three different mattresses in the last three years, and my back and hip discomfort just keeps getting worse. 
The only time I sleep well is when I am traveling. 
First we tried a Tempurpedic, which was like sleeping in a mushy cavern. 
So we exchanged it for a Serta iComfort, which was like sleeping on a glorified rock. 
Last month we decided to try a Casper bed, which is better but still not quite right. 
I am 5'7" and 170 lbs. and my husband is 5'11 and 180 lbs. 
We both used to like very firm beds but need more cushioning as we get older. 
We are also both side and back sleepers. Any suggestions?

Hi Katrina,
Your story is a common one. There are many people, like you, who go to stores to buy a mattress and end up with a years long nightmare instead of the mattress of your dreams.
You have to know why. Once you know why, you can then avoid making the same mistake.
The first thing to understand is that the name brands are playing off of their reputations as "Name Brands". But, they no longer make the quality mattresses they used to make.

No only is it a lousy product, it's a health hazard...consisting of toxic chemicals, which it off gasses. You may have detected and acrid smell from them.
Memory foam is what you want to avoid to get a good night's sleep that lasts for many years.
