Stearns and Foster Lucas Park Luxury Firm Tight Top King mattress set.

Pete,
First, the good news. My wife and I bought a Stearns and Foster Lucas Park Luxury Firm Tight Top King mattress set from you back in May of 2010. Your assistance at the time was indispensable and we've been very happy with the purchase since then. Unfortunately, disaster struck.
We'd been using a mattress protector since we bought it, then a few weeks ago when it came time to wash it, I ignorantly used bleach (which it clearly states not to use), and the plastic lining stuck to itself and was basically ruined. And of course its in the few days our mattress isn't protected that our roof decides to spring a major leak over our bedroom and in pours about 25 gallons of nasty water filled with who knows what.
My best estimate is that 2-4 gallons landed on an area covering about 1/3 of the bed, but without a mattress protector, it soaked right in. It didn't stain the mattress itself (I think the sheet must've absorbed whatever made the water a nasty yellowish color). However, this water was NASTY with a very pungent smell and left your skin itchy and sticky. Like I said, who knows what was in it.
Firstly, is it possible to clean/salvage the mattress without replacing it? Given the volume of water, I imagine that it must've soaked all the way through. And even if the water doesn't do any long term damage, is there any way to get rid of the smell?
Second, if we do have to replace the mattress, do you still recommend the model we purchased before? What is the equivalent model now?
If I remember correctly, at the time we purchased the Lucas Park, it was one of your most recommended models on your blog. Lately, it seems that you now highly recommend the Simmons Beautyrest Black Ava.
Is there a significant enough difference in durability, quality, etc. between the Ansleigh and the model we previously purchased that you'd recommend checking out the Ava?
I was hoping I'd be contacting you in 10 years inquiring about a mattress, not 2 1/2.... but such is life.
Thanks again for your help! I'm sure you hear this a lot, but your honesty and helpfulness are so appreciated when trying to navigate the confusion surrounding the mattress industry.

Wow Daniel,
I am sooo sorry to hear about what happened.
The one you have has been discontinued and they make nothing like it today. S&F was purchased by Tempurpedic and all models use lots of their memory foam.
It's like they've turned to the dark side. We no longer recommend them and we've stopped carrying them.
Here are links to the Simmons Black Ava.

Salvaging what you have will be iffy. The mattress, once wet, will never be the same. The materials inside have been compromised.
As far as the odor is concerned, there are two things that I might try.
First and cheapest is baking soda. If that doesn't do it, I would look for an odor neutralizer at the pet store. I've never had the need to use it, but if it really works on those tough pet odors, it's worth a try.
Before using those things, it'll be important to dry the mattress. Getting heat inside the mattress won't be easy. You may go through a couple of hair dryers trying...the best way I can think of to propel hot air past the outer fabric.

Moisture from perspiration causes premature wear.
Protect your investment with high quality, Waterproof Mattress and Pillow Protectors that sleep cool and don't shrink.

Thanks, Pete
