Herniated discs, Sciatica, Relieving pressure points...A Latex foam mattress topper.

Hello,
I’m looking into purchasing a new mattress for my mother...she has a rather large tumor in her gluteus (soft tissue sarcoma) that is inoperable and causes her considerable pain.  She feels best when lying down propped up by various pillows.  I have been wondering if a waterbed wouldn't provide some relief, because the pain is caused by the pressure on the tumor, and I have read that waterbeds even off pressure points.    Her mattress is about 15-20 years old, so I have a hard time identifying it but I believe it’s a coil mattress.  A few months ago my sister added a foam top, about 1 inch thick with those soft “points”.  That improved things but not much.
Another important point though is that my dad is also suffering from sciatica pain, due to two herniated discs that press on the sciatic nerve.  He sleeps on his side with a pillow between his knees and that seems to help, but I wonder if a waterbed wouldn't be worse for him.  Right now they still sleep together though if my mother’s condition worsens that might not be the case in the future. 
 I really appreciate your thoughts on this issue.

Hi Carsya,
Air and water mattresses rely on displacement of body weight and provide poor support for the spine. Also, most are padding with cheap poly or memory foams, which compress and flatten out quickly. Once their initial comfort is lost, the bag holding the air or water becomes a source of pressure point pain.
The foam that you sister bought is this type of foam....and as you've seen, provides little relief.
