Back Pain, Sleep Number Bed makes it worse, Which Mattress?

Gary writes:

Hi there,
I am an old broken bodybuilder (47, 5’8”, 215lbs) with spondylolisthesis (bad low back).  Because of my back pain, I have been forced to become a side sleeper, which seems to now be the cause of chronic shoulder pain.  I have been sleeping on a sleep number bed for 2 years, and it seems to be causing more harm than good.
Could you please give recommendations to improve comfort, reduce pain, and help me get some sleep?
Your input is greatly appreciated, Gary

Hi Gary,
An air mattress, like a waterbed, offers no upward support...but relies solely on displacement of your weight for support. This is not adequate support for anyone...least of all, a large person with back problems....contrary to what you were told at the time of purchase.
Having been a body builder, you have made side sleeping more of a challenge.
The proper mattress, with the proper support, will allow you to sleep on your back.
Add to that a 2" soft Talalay latex foam mattress topper for surface softness that doesn't collapse, and you'll also be able to sleep on your side with a lot less pressure on your shoulder.
Here are links to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Ava luxury firm mattress and to the latex toppers. This sleep system combination is what we use at home, with both, my wife and I in the 220 some pound range.

Thanks, Pete
