An Adjustable Bed & Mattress for Elderly Mom‏

Hi Pete
My frail elderly mother needs a new bed asap. She has a T12 compression fracture and can’t lie flat comfortably. She also has trouble getting into beds that are too high. She can do 23” comfortably, but I’m not sure how much higher she can go. She was 5’5”, now 5’2” and weighs 155 lbs. She’s a side sleeper and likes a soft mattress, but if it’s too soft she will have trouble moving and getting out of the bed.
I want to get her an adjustable bed and I’m not sure what for a mattress. She doesn’t need the massage or any fancy adjustments on the frame, but it should operate reliably. I thought she might like the icomfort by serta, but am open to all suggestions.
Thank you, Grace

Hi Grace,
You and your mom are about to become victims, because of your current frame of mind.
ASAP puts you at a tremendous disadvantage. You are bound to run headlong into making a big mistake.
A traditional adjustable bed frame won't solve her problem. You can't tilt the bed up AND sleep on your side.
I'm guessing that you're looking at the Serta iComfort because of its ranking with Consumer Reports. Two mattress issues ago, CR had no recommendations because "The mattress industry is far to complex for us to understand".
The mattress you're considering loses its initial comfort within months. It's a lousy mattress.
Frankly, I'm not convinced that you need any of this.
There are often better ways to deal with your set of circumstances.
One thing is certain. You will throw away a ton of money on what you think you want...not to mention, not making life better for your mom in the process.
I'd like to help you, but first have some questions...if you're still interested.

Hi Pete
Thank you for responding. It’s too early to call you; I’m on the east coast so here’s a bit more info for now:
She was sleeping on her side in the hospital bed with head and legs elevated.
We just moved her to assisted living and the queen bed she had is too big, so we left it behind hoping to find a twin.
We could retrieve it if necessary, but she had trouble getting out of it especially.
She is currently sleeping on her couch with a board under the cushions for support and stilts to raise the height.
I’ll try to call at a more reasonable time. And you’re right, we are in a hurry, but would rather not make a mistake
Thank you, Grace

Hi Grace,
If she needs to have her head elevated, it would be better to do so while still keeping her level so that she can sleep on her side comfortably.
The least expensive way would be to block up a regular mattress and boxspring at the head.
Also, here is a link to an adjustable bed base that does that job. I don't sell them, but you can buy directly through them. I've seen them at trade shows and they are better quality than what you can normally buy at retail.
