Chanced upon your website, after a friend sent me some information to the effect that a Temperpedic works well for people suffering from herniated disc conditions (which apparently is not the case, judging from what I read at your website).
My wife and I purchased a Sealy Posturepedic ("Body Fusion") with plush pillowtop a couple of years ago. I researched the situation as best I could at the time and this seemed like the best choice. I have two herniated discs (L4, L5) with some sciatica and am only able to recline for a couple of hours at a time, after which the pain obliges me to get up. The Sealy has not helped. It took us a while nonetheless to finish making all the payments.
From reading your blogs, it seems that for someone with my condition, you would recommend a Stearns & Foster Caravelle with a two-inch latex foam topper, correct?
One issue is the cost of this type of purchase, combined with the fact that it takes a while to determine whether a particular mattress can really help. By the time we figure it out, we're stuck with the purchase, which takes a while to pay off.
Do you think there is a high likelihood that the S&F would make a substantial difference for someone in my situation? If so, it would be worth considering, when we are in a position financially to make the purchase.
Thank you for your time! Dan
Hi Dan,
The Caravelle hasn't been available for several years, but the principle remains the same. Those would have been old blog posts you were reading. And while that mattress is no longer available. There is one that is very similar in it's design...albeit a two-sided mattress.
Your back requires firm support. A plush pillowtop is not the way to get what you need and the comfort you want.
Only a firm mattress with a latex foam topper can do that. The poly foam used in at the surface of softer mattresses, even those providing firm support, loses its shape much too quickly.
Pillowtops accelerate this pre-mature loss of shape. Once this happens, the nerves in the small of your back get pinched, which causes the sciatica.
Maintaining your spine's natural alignment is key. Memory foam will do that, but for only a short time. It's a lot of money to spend every year...year after year.
And you can forget about the warranty. The memory foam is a perfect out for them. Even after it's lost its support, it will return enough when you get off of it, to appear normal. It's positively diabolical.
