Large Woman replacing a pillowtop mattress.

Sarah writes:

Hi,
I have an older Simmons Beautyrest World Class Pinnacle Pillow Top. I am finding it to be very uncomfortable so it's time for a new one. I sleep on my side and get pressure points on my shoulder and hip. Sleeping on my back is also uncomfortable. I spend a lot of time tossing and turning. I am 35 years old, 5'6" and weigh 250 lbs. Mattress shopping has been overwhelming so far. I have no idea what type or even what brand I should be looking at. Any advice?
Thanks!
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
You based you last decision on your physical comfort. Today's mattresses are made to sell, not last.
The initial comfort of the mattress you have faded quickly and now is painful to sleep on.
Pillowtops don't hold up well. That would be the first thing to avoid.

Understand that a mattress is a pressure sensitive item. The more pressure you put upon it, the faster it will wear.
The softer the mattress is to start will, the sooner all that will happen.

The upholstery materials used in today's mattresses are a combination of poly foam and memory foam. Both are designed to provide initial comfort that will easily make the sale.
Neither is designed to last for very long. The mattress industry is geared to making mattresses that need to be replaced frequently.
So, going to a store to pick out a mattress will produce more of the same of what you have just experienced.

However, there is a way to get what you want and have it last...be comfortable and supportive over a much longer period of time.
You do this, by substituting quality products for the crappy products currently being used.

Start off with a mattress that is strong enough to hold your weight. Plush and pillowtop mattresses will not do this.
The strongest name brand model on the market today, is the Simmons Beautyrest Black...one Series up from the World Class.
The difference is that half of the coils in the Black Series uses a triple strand wire "Cable Coil"...a coil that is heavier than any other.
The mattress that will best hold you is the Alexia model, shown here:

The upholstery material that will provide softness and not wear out anytime soon, is latex foam. Two inches of soft Talalay latex will provide surface comfort that is uniquely comfortable.
It provides a zero-gravity feel. You don't sink through it. It holds you up and relives your pressure points and relaxes your muscles so that you can sleep deeply.
Together, the mattress and topper provide everything your body needs...firm contouring support for your spine and a comfortable sleeping surface for the rest of you.
Latex foam is all-natural and far more resilient than any other type of chemical based foam. Being so, it absorbs much of your body weight and the mattress lasts longer as a result of that.
Here is the link to the latex toppers.
